ORGANIC PEROXIDES: A~YR~RT

Consumption of organic peroxides in the U.S. as polymerization initiators and cross-linking agents reached 19,000 ton in 1986, representing some 85-90 per cent of total production, according to a report by consultant Chem Systems. The importance of these materials to the polymer industry extends well beyond this relatively small volume, the report notes, as demonstrated by their use in the production of more than 8m ton/year of polymers in the U.S. For conventional uses, demand for peroxides in the U.S. is expected to reach around 23,000 ton by 1990 and 26,000 ton by 1995, representing an average annual growth rate of 3.4 per cent. However, demand growth in Western Europe and Japan over the same period is expected to be rather lower, averaging around 2.5 per cent in each region.

COMPANY NEWS TESTING EFFECTIVENESS Bekaert Fibre Technologies in the U.S. has developed an instrument called BEKISCAN which will test the effectiveness of shielOF FXI SHIELDING ding in a plastics component during production. It is handheld and is calibrated to test shielding effectiveness of a steel-filled plastic in the 30-50 db range.

CERAMIC MICROBALLOONS

Zeeland Industries Inc. (U.S.), has begun commercial production of white ceramic microspheres which are said to cost 80% less than many glass spheres. Particle size ranges from lo-200 microns in diameter, and the S.G. is approximately 0.6.

ADDITIVE FEEDER FOR COLOURS

The MB Mini Additive Feeder from Kenn-Vey Motan (U.S.) accurately meters colour concentrate to the throat of moulding machines or extruders utilizing a precision metering screw coupled with a two-stage (speed and time) control and an additive feed insert. A "comparitor control" makes on-line adjustments to keep screw speed constant, while a count calibrator adjusts the flow of the concentrate dispensed for each cycle and is matched to A screw withdrawal system ensures full-flow the shot size. calibration. The basic unit can be adapted to handle up to five materials, including powders, regrinds, and pellets.
