orders. The pictorial review consists of more than 1,000 illustrations, graphs , tables, diagnostic and management algorithms, photographs of clinical findings, gross and microscopic views of various pathologic conditions , electroencephalographic and electromyographic recordings, and all types of radiologic images. Each figure has corresponding text that explains the finding or concept in detail. Most chapters include information and references that are up to date. Strengths: The major strengths of this atlas are its originality, the wide array of high-quality images , the comprehensive text despite an atlas format, the choice of contributors for most chapters, and the true applicability of much of the material to learning and practicing clinical neurology. Deficiencies: Some readers may disagree with certain details of the diagnostic and management algorithms. In addition, a few tables and lists are incomplete. Recommended Readership: This atlas offers images, text, and concepts not found in any other book on clinical neurology. I strongly recommend that medical students and all physicians who assess and manage patients with neurologic disorders have this atlas in their personal or institutional libraries. Overall Grading:
A Clinician's Guide to Chemotherapy Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, edited by Louise B. Grochow and Matthew M. Ames, 578 pp, with illus, $79, Baltimore, Williams & Wilkins (telephone: 800-638-0672), 1998, ISBN 0-683-18111-4 Type of Book: A multiauthored resource for investigators and clinical oncologists on the use of cancer chemotherapy in the clinical setting. Scope of Book: This text provides a comprehensive review of pharmacologic principles for clinic-based cancer chemotherapy. Contents: The book consists of 26 chapters organized into 3 areas: variations in drug disposition, specific drugs and classes, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic methods. The first section includes a chapter on pharmacogenetics and polymorphisms, a chapter devoted to the effects of age on chemotherapy disposition, and a chapter that examines the pharmacokinetics of drug delivery to the central nervous system. The second section provides a comprehensive, up-to-date review of currently used chemotherapeutic agents, including several recently approved drugs. Of particular usefulness to clinical investigators who are undertaking pharmacokinetic studies, the last section of the book provides guidance on assay methods, noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analysis, and population approaches for estimation. Strengths: This book provides a comprehensive , up-to-date review of the clinical pharmacology of cancer chemotherapy. The text is relatively easy to read and should be useful to both new and established investigators. Deficiencies: I noted no major deficiencies. Recommended Readership: Residents, fellows, pharmacists, pharmacologists, research nurses , and physicians with an interest in oncology. Overall Grading:

Type of Book: A comprehensive multiauthored textbook of cardiology . Scope of Book: This book covers all aspects of cardiovascular medicine , from basic research to clinical management issues. Contents: This single-volume text contains 98 chapters divided proportionally into the following sections: Preventive Cardiology (II %), Clinical Cardiology (33%), Cardiovascular Imaging (14%), Electrophysiology and Pacing (15%), Invasive Cardiology and Surgical Techniques (9%), Heart Failure and Transplan tation (7%), Molecular Cardiology (4%), and Vascular Biology (7%). It is about one-third larger than most comparable texts. Each chapter follows a similar format, beginning with an overview, a glossary, and a historical perspective and ending with controversies, personal perspectives, and future directions. The book provides an in-depth review of each topic and includes unique chapters on psychosocial issues, medical economics, interpretation of design and conduct of research, databases in cardiology, medicolegal issues, quality of care, and care in the managed-care era. Stress echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and coronary stenting are discussed as well. Each chapter has about 200 references; particularly well-referenced chapters are "Pericardia) Disease, Restriction, and Diastolic Dysfunction" (616 references), "Acute Myocardial

Infarction and Complications" (332 and 481 references), "PTCA" (369 references), "Stenting" (452 references), and "Myocarditis" (390 references). Strengths: This is an impressive work due to its scope, detail, and format. The glossaries will be particularly useful to beginning cardiovascular fellows, and the controversy sections will help readers distinguish current evidence-based practice from standard practice. Finally, the cost of the text is about 4.7 cents per page, which is a "bargain" for a medical publication (the 1997 Braunwald textbook costs 6.5 cents per page, and Yusuf's recent text is 14.5 cents per page). Deficiencies: Because of its massive scope and size, the book is somewhat cumbersome. Black ink is used for all the tables and figures, and the book has no color plates. Finally, the textual material seems more densely "packed" than in most textbooks. Recommended Readership: Cardiology fellows, cardiologists, and internists who want a current, thoroughly referenced text. Overall Grading:
