Fire retardant prepreg resin for aerospace

TECHNOLOGY

Sicomin has presented a new fire retardant prepreg resin at JEC. SR 1526 is a two-component epoxy system designed to suit in-house prepreg processes with improved viscosity and range of combination hardeners. SR1526 has been awarded a number of accreditations for aerospace cabin interiors and is also suitable for rail applications. Sicomin also exhibited a range of clear coating, laminating and foaming epoxy systems for automotive and its fire retardant products for the rail and aerospace markets.

Structural parts Developed specifically for the production of challenging geometric laminates, Sicomin’s foaming epoxy systems are suitable for the production of strong, high quality, structural parts that are too expensive or complex to create using a rigid foam or honeycomb core. On show was TOP Clear clear resin system designed for the manufacture of laminates with a translucent finish making it suitable for the production of clear carbon parts. Sicomin has also developed SR1124, which offers fire resistance as required for automotive, rail, aerospace and construction

applications. Designed for hand laminating and filament winding processes, SR1124 has been improved to ensure halogen free and

flame retardant properties with low smoke opacity and toxicity levels. Sicomin; www.sicomin.com

TFP launches new range of thermoplastic veils Technical Fibre Products (TFP) plans to introduce an extended range of thermoplastic veils in include PPS, PEI, PEEK, polyamide and polyimide designed to improve the mechanical properties in composites.

‘The lightweight veils can be interleaved between reinforcement plies to provide a means to significantly improve the interlaminar toughness of a composite structure, increasing resistance to

both mode-I and mode-II fracture,’ said business development director Adam Black. Technical Fibre Products; www.tfpglobal. com

Porcher Industries supplies towpreg range Porcher Industries has developed towpreg technology suitable for automated and advanced fiber placement (AFP) and filament winding. Towpregs are continuous carbon or glass fibers threaded or impregnated with high performance thermoplastics and are suitable for out-of-autoclave (OOA) processing. Depending on the final application, the polymer content in weight covers a range

from 30% to 50% and according to requirements, fibers can be fully impregnated in various widths.

Energy consumption Compared to slitted tapes, towpregs are 100% continuous, avoiding any splice, the company says. The towpregs also offer high speed processing, lower energy consumption, a very low curvature

angle and very constant weight and width along the towpreg. There are no dry/lift fibers on the towpreg surface and less downtime (no splice management). Towpreg technology is particularly suitable for the aerospace, aeronautic and oil/ gas industries. Porcher industries; www.porcherind. com
