Nutrition Awards The 14th John M. Kinney Nestle Michael M. Meguid M.D., Ph.D. (Editor-in-Chief), Katherine Kinney Loving (Guest speaker) In recognition of Dr. John M. Kinney's seminal contributions Nutrition Institute to the field of clinical nutrition [1], the Nestle in conjunction with Nutrition: The International Journal of Applied and Basic Nutritional Sciences, and with the Nutritional Sciences, Education and Research Fund (NSERF), held its 14th Award Ceremony at the 33rd European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden. Despite Professor Kinney's demise early that year [2], Dr. Ferdinand Haschke, President of Medical and Scientific Research, Nestec, Ltd., opened the Award Ceremony, expressing his condolences to the Kinney family, to his daughter Katherine Kinney Loving, and the legion of his post-doctoral research fellows who attended the Award Ceremony, and emphasizing the celebratory nature of John Kinney's accomplishments. John's presence was represented by his daughter Katherine, who gave a warm-hearted reflection of her father as the Mensch that we knew. She related aspects of his humanity hidden in the

work in advancing patient related nutrition support. I am also deeply thankful for Dr. Michael Meguid, who established the awards in my father's name, and has tirelessly worked to make the JMK Awards possible, along with the support of the journal Nutrition and NSERF. Finally, I want to thank ESPEN and President Dr. Pierre Singer of The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism for coordinating the Awards ceremony during such a busy and engaging Medical Congress. I am honored to be here in Gothenburg, in my father's stead. These

awards meant such a great deal to him. And this community, here at ESPEN, was his community. I'd like to share a few thoughts about my father, and why these Awards mattered so much to him. Across John's youth, he experienced first hand a huge amount of loss and death of those closest to him. Before he even outgrew his childhood, he had resolved that he would do something when he grew up that would contribute to our ability to preserve life. He attended Harvard Medical School during WWII, in an

accelerated program during which he would do four years of medical school in only three, as part of a medical officer's training program in the Navy. His passionate drive to learn everything he could in many different fields of medicine contributed to his being awarded one of only two medical positions in the Navy's secret postwar study of the effects of atomic radiation. Later on this would enable his early use of radiotracers in his metabolic research. The more he studied medicine, the more he was drawn to what was considered at the time non-traditional, if not incomprehensible, interdisciplinary post-doctoral study. What was a surgeon in the early 1950's doing, asking to train for years with a renowned biochemist doing basic research? Yet at critical steps along the long road of his medical training, John felt extremely fortunate to have had mentors who not only guided and educated him, but who also believed in what he was doing, lending their support to his research. To have these John M. Kinney Awards established was to John both a great honor and the best legacy that he might have ever dreamt of. There are, no doubt, many people in this room who

have been the recipients of his encouragement during their younger professional years. He absolutely loved to hear about, and to engage with, the brightest minds carrying medical research forward! There is nothing more that he could have wanted than to pass on the good fortune of mentorship that helped him to turn his own passionate drive into a lifetime of contributions to advancement in his field. John died, about a year ago, a happy man, with me by his side. He had lived a very full life, and felt he had so much to be grateful for. Thank you to ESPEN for being his community. You truly were his community. Thank you for sharing what he cared about most. Thank you to all of the people and institutions that have made, and continue to make, possible the support of young researchers through the John M. Kinney Awards.
