failure; (iv) Innovations in process technology and the control of microstructure; (v) Production of composite microstructures and of ceramic-matrix composites, including fibres; (vi) Ceramic coating technology for high temperatures and wear resistant applications', (vii} Engineering reliability and the testing of ceramic systems. A number of scientific and industrial tours will be arranged and there will be a programme for accompanying guests.
1985 15--17 April. 10th InternationalForging Conference, Sheffield,U.K. Contact: Conference Department (FC), The Metals Society, 1 Carlton House Terrace, London S W I Y 5DB, U.K. Tel. 01-839-4071. Telex 8814813. The general theme of this event will be the consideration of the forging industry's capabilities and future requirements. These aspects will be discussed notably in relation to five main user industries: (i) Nuclear and power generation; {ii)Shipbuilding; (iii)Offshore; (iv) Aerospace; (v) Chemical. For each industry, both supplier and user viewpoints will be considered. One day of the conference will be devoted to 'technical exchanges' in a number of parallel workshops. Topics will include the production of small forgings, energy conservation and fitness for purpose. The conference will be followed, on 18 and 19 April, by optional technical visits.
16--17 April, Symposium on Defects in Composites: Detection and Significance, London, U.K. Arranged by Imperial College,London, in collaborationwith the Royal Aircraft Establishment. Contact: Mr. F.L. Matthews, Aeronautics Department, Imperial College of Science and Technology, Prince Consort Road, London S W 7 2BY, U.K. The aim of this event is to bring together workers in the composite materials field, from industry and from academic and research establishments. The organisers will consider papers on all aspects of defects in composites but preference will be given to: (i) detec~ tion methods and relating N D T information to defect significance and {ii)the development of techniques based on mathematical modelling that will allow prediction of the growth rate of significant defects. Authors wishing to submit papers are invited to send abstracts of at least 300 words, before 30 June 1984.
13--15 June. International Conference on Advances in Surface Engineering, Brighton, U.K. Contact: John Sanders, The Welding Institute, Abington Hall, Abington, Cambridge CB1 6AL, U.K. Tel. 0223-891162. Telex 81183. Telefax 0223892588. This event, originally entitled "Advances in Surface Coating Technology", has been postponed from 13--15 June 1984. Further information will be supplied by The Welding Institute upon request.
