The 2012 Tetrahedron Prize For Creativity In Organic Chemistry
The Executive Board of Editors for Tetrahedron Publications is pleased to announce that the 2012 Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic Chemistry has been awarded to Professor Paul Wender, who is presently the Bergstrom Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University. The Prize was awarded in recognition of Professor Wender’s numerous creative accomplishments in the general field of organic chemistry, especially in synthesizing complex molecules, inventing new reactions of general utility, and applying synthesis to solve significant problems in biology and medicine. In celebration of Professor Wender’s achievements, a special Symposium in Print has been assembled that is entitled, ‘Organic Synthesis: Applications to Biology, Medicine, and Materials’. This general theme is intended to capture the varied innovative contributions to the field of organic chemistry by those who expand and extend available methods and by those who apply new reactions and strategies to target-directed synthesis and to the synthesis of molecules having relevance in biology, medicine, and material science. In the first portion of this unique Symposium-in-Print, Professor Wender provides a captivating account of the evolution of his contributions to organic synthesis and its use to address medical problems. Following Professor Wender’s engaging summary of his own journey is a series of papers from a few of the many co-workers, colleagues, and friends who have been associated

with him over the course of his distinguished career. These exciting contributions represent the wide range of activities that are conducted within the general arena of inventing and developing useful methods and strategies and their application to the synthesis of natural products and other molecules having potentially useful properties, especially biological ones. Although these accounts reveal solutions to a number of different chemical problems, one can also find reference to unsolved problems and future challenges that constitute a fertile field for the further discovery of new and exciting aspects of organic chemistry. Indeed, I am confident that the articles collected herein will inspire new inquiries that further advance the science of synthetic organic chemistry and its many applications to the diverse areas of chemical biology, medicine, and materials. I hope you enjoy reading them as I did.
