MIND

TO MOLECULE

ABSTRACT Dr. Nancy C. Andreasen

This program will review recent progress in understanding the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia, the mechanisms that produce the disease, and various approaches to treatment. The psychopathology of schizophrenia will be explored both in terms of the subjective experience involved and the neuralmechanisms that produce clinical phenomena. New areas of emerging research will be examined, including neuroimaging and molecular biology. Approaches to treatment will be examined from the perspectives of basic pharmacology and neurochemistry, the use of conventional and atypical neuroleptics, and the relevance of psychosocial treatments. The program will conclude by examining future directions for research that appear particularly promising, including developmental neuroanatomy and the molecular mechanisms of memory.
