The Academic Library Budget and Expenditure Report, by Primary Research Group, Inc. New York: Primary Research Group, 1996. 113~. $127.00 ($70.00 for academic libraries). ISBN l-57440-027-4. This work provides the library administrator with statistical data gathered from a survey of 100 academic libraries in the United States and Canada. Complementing somewhat the ACRL University Library Statistics, its usefulness seems to lie in data relating to the impact of information technology on academic library budgets. Several chapters include tables related to spending, salaries, benefits, and materials expenditures. In addition, a significant portion of the work focuses on technology, including tables on Internet services to patrons, online services, CD-ROM technology, and computer expenditures. Tables often provide useful ratios, in addition to mean and median averages. The thesis of the work is not clearly defined for the reader, nor is the work’s relationship to other available statistical data. This would certainly have enhanced its utility. The title of the work might have been more descriptive. In addition, numerous typographical errors tend to detract from the work. Though it is stated that 100 academic libraries were surveyed, the response rate is not clear. A sample survey and list of institutions surveyed would have been valuable additions to the work. The tables are often stratified by type of library: community college, four-year public college, and religious-affiliated institution libraries. It might be questioned whether this is the best stratification to allow for useful comparability. This work is of marginal value to most library science collections and recommended only in cases where library statistical resources are collected comprehensively.-Deborah Rinderknecht, University Libraries, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE 68588 . Advances in Collection Development and Resource Management, volume 2, edited by Thomas W. Leonhardt. Greenwich, CT: JAI Press, 1996. 251~. $73.25. ISBN 0-76230097-3. Fifteen essays by 24 academic librarians “document current trends in collection development and resource management . .. with an emphasis on electronic information technology” (p. ix). Topics cover management issues, collection assessment techniques, government documents, a duplicate exchange, electronic journals, interlibrary loan (ILL), PromptCat associated with approval plans, and the use and management of video and film resources.
