EDITORIAL The age of electronic publishing
I
n the last issue of Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, we were able to bring you the excellent news that JFMS had been accepted for citation on Medline. This was a major achievement for the journal and says much for the quality of the papers that have been submitted and published. The availability of ‘online’ databases such as Medline have undoubtedly transformed the way many of us keep up to date with literature in the field in which we are interested and, for many of us, this may even represent the major use we have for the Internet. The logical progression of this is, of course, the development of full electronic publishing. Not that electronic publishing is likely to replace the printed format, at least in the near future, but the availability of full-text papers via the Internet represents an extremely attractive resource, as well as the potential for authors to publish crucial data and information with the absolute minimum of delay. It is therefore extremely pleasing that we are able to announce that JFMS has been accepted for article-by-article publishing through IDEALFirst. Through this scheme, electronic publication is available rapidly, on an individual article basis, once a paper has been accepted for

publication. This fast-track publication technology will enable authors to cite their paper [via a digital object identifier (DOI) giving each publication a unique identification] prior to the printed version appearing, and allow subscribers immediate access to the very latest information. IDEALFirst is part of the acclaimed Harcourt online IDEAL publishing service (International Digital Electronic Access Library). Currently more than 1700 institutes and companies are benefiting from access to IDEAL in more than 20 countries. From now on, all individual subscribers will also benefit through a new Harcourt initiative — free online access to the Journal through IDEAL! Access to the service will be via your subscriber number, which can be found on your address label.
