The Asian-Pacific Society Of Cardiology Report Of The Advanced Course In Cardiology l-24 September 1999 The Advanced Course in Cardiology was held under the auspices of The Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology at Epworth Hospital, Melbourne. The meeting was judged to be successful with a large input from a number of overseas teachers as well as a tremendous effort from the Melbourne members of The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Institute and Cleveland Clinic in the U.S.A. During the third week of the course an excellent seminar was held on the diagnosis and management of systemic hypertension by Priscilla Kincaid-Smith. Henry Krum and his colleagues presented a l-day symposium on the newer aspects of diagnosis and management of all aspects of congenitive heart failure.

A total of 75 cardiologists from nearly all the Asian Pacific countries attended the course for either a week or for the whole period. The course was opened by the Past President of The Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology, Sir Brian Barrett-Boyes of New Zealand, and during the final week of the course, we had the pleasure of the company and keynote addresses from Henry Marriott who has published very widely in the field of electrocardiography and the treatment of heart rhythm abnormalities over the past 40 years.

Jitu Vohra, assisted by Associate Professor Wei Hua of the Fu Wai Hospital in Beijing, presented a symposium on the development of electrophysiology and current forms of treatment, while we had a further symposium on pacing and implantable defibrillators presented by Harry Mond, assisted by Henry Marriott and Jonni Cooper. There were also highlight lectures by Henry Marriott of Tampa, Florida, Professor Wei Hua from Fu Wai Hospital in Beijing, Manny Villafana from Minneapolis, and Jonni Cooper of Tampa, Florida.

As well as lectures and demonstrations, the meeting was interspersed with symposia on specific cardiovascular subjects. Paul Calafiore ran a l-day symposium on echocardiography. Allen Yuen presented a half-day symposium on accident and emergency care of patients presenting with chest pain.

The course was regarded as being most helpful to colleagues from many of the Asian Pacific countries, and it is anticipated that the 4-week course for 2000 will be held again in September, with registration on Monday, 4 September 2000. Further information can be obtained by faxing Graeme Sloman on +61 3 9429 7864.

Ron Dick, in conjunction with the pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly, organised a two-day symposium on invasive cardiology, demonstrating diagnosis and management of coronary artery lesions. Live case demonstrations were transmitted from the catheterisation laboratory at Epworth Hospital and from the Texas Heart
