Abstract PURPOSE: To study the relationship between the matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) gene polymorphism and genetic susceptibility to COPD in Han nationality of southwestern China. METHODS: The genotypes of MMP-9 gene in 65 patients with COPD and 101 healthy controls were detected by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) based restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) technique.Retrospective case-control study was performed to analyze the odds ratio(OR) which was representative of relative risk rate of COPD susceptibility. RESULTS: The frequency of MMP-9 C/C,C/T genotype were 88%,16% in COPD group, respectively, and 96%,2% in controll group, respectively. There were significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.01).Taking C/T as the reference, the C/C group showed a reduced risk rate(OR=0.467,95%CI=0.237-0.924,P<0.05). CONCLUSION: MMP-9(C/C) genotype reduces the susceptibility to COPD in Han nationality of southwestern China. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Smokers should receive MMP-9 gene polymorphism detection in order to predict the possibility of developing COPD.
