“The Atlas of Technics in Surgery” will provide a significant reference both for the surgeon in training and for the practicing genera1 surgeon as a comprehensive review of operative technics. CHARLES R. BABER, M.D.

As Dr. John L. Madden, Director of Surgery at New York’s St. CIare’s HospitaI and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, New York MedicaI CoIIege, expIains in the preface, he has produced this AtIas for the benefit of the genera1 surgeon and for the surgica1 student at al1 IeveIs of Iearning. Areas of specialization are not covered and onIy those operations which the active general surgeon is IikeIy to perform are outhned. In brief, the book contains introductory care and chapters on pre- and postoperative anesthesia; the remainder of the text deals with IOO operative procedures. In pre- and postHenry operative care, guest author Dr. RandaII has emphasized fluid and eIectroIyte balance. Dr. George A. Keating is the guest author of anesthesia for the genera1 surgica1 patient. The first eleven pIates cover the cIassic incisions. Dr. Madden’s terse notes paraIIe1 the step by step procedures of the plates. CertainIy one outstanding feature of the book is the discussion which fohows each operation. For these notes, Dr. Madden enlisted an impressive roster of authors. For MichaeI DeBakey discusses exampIe, Dr. excision of aneurysms of thoracic and abdomina1 aorta, and Dr. Clarence Dennis contributes notes on ileostomy and subtota1 coIectomy, etc. Another essential feature of the text is the cIose communion between surgeon and artists, Alfred Feinberg and Robert Wabnitz, who watched each procedure not once but many times. Dr. Madden’s intention, that there be no confusing gaps in progression, has resulted in excellent, detaiIed, step by step ihustrations although a certain Iack of sharpness in the drawings contributes a sameness to the entire page of sketches. Of considerabIe vaIue, especiahy to the surgica1 intern and resident, is the extensive bibliography which fohows each operation. American

Operative Surgery. Volume VI, Orthopedic Surgery. Edited by Charles Rob, M.C., M.CHIR., F.R.C.S. and Rodney Smith, M.S., F.R.C.S. Butterworth and Co., Ltd. London, 1958. Written by an iIIustrious group of British orthopedic surgeons, this book is essentiaIIy an atIas of orthopedic operations with concise paragraphs relating to indications, preoperative management, etc. In general, it can be said that the illustrations are clear and we11 chosen. With few exceptions the authors present a surprisingly broad viewpoint in the reIatively brief text. More than a few surgeons wouId take issue with Professor Trueta’s management of acute hematogenous osteomyeIitis : operative intervention if tenderness persists twenty-four hours after antibiotic therapy, tourniquet, driI1 holes, local administration of peniciIIin and the dosage of the peniciIIin. In the chapter on growth disturbances of the lower extremity no mention whatever is given to epiphysiodesis by stapling. Instead, a much less we11 recognized technic for stimulating growth is described (removal of a Iongitudinal segment of the tibia1 shaft). The sections on spinal operations and those concerning the shouIder are particuIarIy outstanding. The various types of foot stabiIizations are considered quite adequately, aIthough some of the photographs of the initiaI stages of dissection of the foot should either be omitted or revised for clarity. In a book as comprehensive as this, very IittIe “essentia1” orthopedic surgery is omitted. The authors have presented an excehent piece of work. The book is recommended for everyone interested in the subject of orthopedic surgery. WILLIAM STANLEY SMITH, M.D. 782
