The Australasian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons The Society congratulates our member - Alan Gale. He has been awarded the RACS International Medical, one of the College’s highest honours. This is not an annual award but is only given when appropriate candidates are recommended and approved by the RACS. He will be presented with this prestigious award at the ASC in Hong Kong. Alan has helped establish cardiothoracic units in 11 Pacific and South East Asian countries. He has undertaken

more than 50 international trips to help with this massive project. He explained that for the most part initially these units treated congenital abnormalities and the ravages of rheumatic fever. This role has been extended as the need for cardiothoracic surgery increases because of both lifestyle changes and cigarette smoking.

ASCTS RESEARCH FOUNDATION Supporting Research in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Brochures have been sent to members for their Waiting Rooms to elicit support from patients and families to help our fundraising efforts. Please let the office know if you require more of these brochures and/or if you would like a

display stand into which they can be placed. Members are also reminded how important it is to support the Foundation financially with our donations as surely this provides the life blood for cardiothoracic surgical research in Australia.
