The basidium in Ustilaginaceae: a correction and an addition In my recent article (Ingold, 1998) some of the labelling in Fig 4 was misplaced. The letters E and F should have been placed lower, to relate to the diagrams beneath them. In that article I stated that my observations on teliospore germination justified a clear distinction between smut fungi which had a unicellular basidium crowned by basidiospores and those with a transversely septate one. However, in work carried out more recently (Ingold, 1999), I found what are apparently both types of basidia in a single species.
