ta ry phrase—it is a “preparedness” proposition and the result a large enough standing arm y of anti-bodies ready for, and strong enough to repel any ordinary bacterial attack. I t is self evident this m ust be a slow process ; its practice has yielded brilliant results in prophylaxis, as in typhoid fever and small-pox control, b u t in th e treatm en t of actual infections it is very disappointing to clinicians. Vaccines made from th e organism actually producing the lesion (autogenous vaccines) are thought to have greater value th an the socalled stock vaccines, because th e anti-bodies called out seem to have a specific action, if any a t all. Recently it has been shown th a t the injection of the proteids from milk, white of an egg, or from bacteria entirely fo r eign to the process, if in am ounts to produce a violent reaction, has cura tive powers. This seems to be inherent in the severity of th e reaction, the very high tem perature or some other feature bringing about the result. Certain individuals are very susceptible to th e injection of foreign proteids or to second injections. This reaction is quite different from the reaction mentioned in the preceding paragraph and has to do w ith the rapid disposal of the foreign proteid and th e rapid form ation of toxic products which may produce a very serious collapse and even death. This is known as anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock. THE CANADIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION IN CHICAGO. This is surely a novelty. It is truly a jolt to our form er notions of a national meeting. A Canadian national m eeting held in a foreign co u n try ! Even th e legislative body, th e Dominion Dental Council, will hold its meeting in Chicago. How did it happen ? A t the dental teachers’ meeting in P ittsburgh a group of members were talking about where th e next meeting would be held. Dr. Hoff joined the group and said, “W here will th e next m eet ing be ?” Dean W ebster said, in a joking way, “In Ann Arbor.” Dr. Hoff thought th e group was talking about the next meeting of the Canadian Dental Association, while as a m a tter of fact it was talking about the teachers’ meeting. Dean Hippie, of Omaha, overheard w hat was said, and immediately consulted th e Secretary of th e National Dental Asso ciation, who was near by, suggesting th a t th e Canadians should be in vited to meet w ith th e National Dental Association as an indication of the close relations between tw o allied countries. As soon as the Secre ta ry returned to Chicago, he consulted Colonel Logan, th e President of th e National Dental Association, and th e invitation came into th e hands of th e Canadian Dental Association in a few days.

The Canadians are to be the guests of the National Dental Associa tion. Accommodation will be provided in which to hold its special m eet ings. The Canadians will have the honor of putting on one of the Gen eral Session Program s and providing ten selected clinics. It is a great responsibility to provide th is im portant session and th e clinics. The intention of the executive of the C. D. A. is to provide two essayists of world-wide distinction in w ar prosthesis. These men will present the results of th eir experience in now almost four years of war. i t is hoped th a t they may have sufficient leave of absence to give some tim e to teach a little of th is im portant work to th e civil profession in Canada before they return. Steps have already been taken to secure leave for these men. At the recent Ontario meeting the Society appointed a committee to assist in every way possible those who wished to avail themselves of the advantages of the greatest dental meeting ever held in America. Canadians who have not attended the National meeting of recent years have no conception of th e magnitude of the affair; nor have they any idea of the unlimited opportunity for advancement in every departm ent of dentistry. Our judgm ent is th a t there will be more Canadian den tists in Chicago A ugust 5th to 9th than ever attended a meeting of the Canadian Dental Association before. Is it an indication of the times or an indication of the bigness of our confreres to the south of us to open th eir doors in such a magnani mous fashion? D entistry is no longer national, even in its legislative aspects; it is world-wide in all its aims and aspirations. It is hoped th a t the President of the C. D. A. may succeed in having a representa tive of the greatest ally of them all, France, at th e meeting. To this end he has approached our Government and th a t of France. France sent Dr. Carrel to the last National meeting, and Canada hopes to have th e honor of presenting another great Frenchm an a t this meeting.— Editorial Dominion Dental Journal.

YOU CAN H ELP WIN THE WAR!—AN A PPEA L FOR PROMPT INDIVIDUAL SERVICE BY EVERY MEMBER. The conduct of th e w ar and, in fact, the very fu tu re of America, are dependent not only upon th e election of a w ar Congress th a t will enact necessary laws, b u t upon th e presence in th e National Legislature of men of vision, ability and broad experience, who are the best qualified of our citizenship to correctly solve the great internal and international questions which will come before the next Congress.
