decaffeinate coffee and tea. Furthermore, ethyl acetate was the only product of the reaction aside from H2. Thus, manufacturers would be able to obtain pure ethyl acetate without energyconsuming purification processes. The authors say this advance could pave the way for completely green systems that generate H2, as well as a wide range of organic chemicals at room temperature from renewable electrical sources.

coordinated to an iridium-containing metal colloid. The complexes can be immobilized on a substrate. The complexes of the invention are useful as tunable and highly robust isolated metal colloids that find use in binding of molecules and catalysis of chemical reactions.

Method and system for forming plug and play metal catalysts

Scientists unlock ‘green’ energy from garden grass Researchers from the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Cardiff University, have found that substantial quantities of hydrogen can be generated from fescue grass by using a cheap catalyst and sunlight. The method has potential for a sustainable hydrogen production process, which in turn has potential in renewable energy since hydrogen does not discharge greenhouse or toxic gases upon burning. Pellet news: ATS, INL test oxidation catalyst Advanced Torrefaction Systems LLC (ATS) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) jointly tested a catalytic oxidation technology that aims to reduce problems encountered in torrefaction facilities, including the generation of highly volatile gases. They collaborated to design and install the catalyst in the INL's torrefaction system in Idaho Falls, ID, US. The partnership conducted two rounds of tests at different temperature levels. ATS's TorreCat technology involves an oxidation catalyst in combusting those volatile gases and transforming them to an inert gas stream of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and steam. The inert gas can be utilized as an industrial heat source, as well as in downstream processes when cooled. A metal catalyst is formed by vaporizing a quantity of metal and a quantity of carrier forming a vapor cloud. The vapor cloud is quenched forming precipitate nanoparticles comprising a portion of metal and a portion of carrier. The nanoparticles are impregnated onto supports. The supports can be used in existing heterogeneous catalysis systems. A system for forming metal catalysts comprises means for vaporizing a quantity of metals and a quantity of carrier, quenching the resulting vapor cloud and forming precipitate nanoparticles comprising a portion of metals and a portion of carrier. The system further comprises means for impregnating supports with the nanoparticles. US 9,302,260, SDCMaterials Inc., Tempe, AZ USA, 5 APR 2016.

Jet loop reactor having nanofiltration The invention relates to a device for the continuous, homogeneous-catalysis reaction of a liquid with a gas and optionally an additional fluid, wherein the device comprises at least one reactor having an external liquid circulation driven by a pump, and wherein the device has at least one membrane separation stage that preferably holds back the homogeneous catalyst. The aim of the invention is to specify a device that allows homogeneous-catalysis gas/ liquid phase reactions, in particular hydroformylations, which operate with membrane separation of the catalyst to be performed economically at an industrially relevant scale. A jet loop reactor is provided as the reactor, and that the pump and the membrane separation stage are arranged in the same external liquid circuit. The arsenal of structures based on calixarenes provides tools that are effective in numerous areas of supramolecular chemistry. The editors have compiled a timely volume, which contains up to date, high calibre contributions from a large number of international authors. A broad perspective on the progress and future of calixarene chemistry is presented. Aimed at students and researchers active in Supramolecular Chemistry. P. Neri, J. L. Operando Studies in Heterogeneous Catalysis (Springer Series in Chemical Physics) This book is devoted to the emerging field of techniques for visualizing atomicscale properties of active catalysts under actual working conditions, i.e. high gas pressures and high temperatures. It explains how to understand these observations in terms of the surface structures and dynamics and their detailed interplay with the gas phase. This provides an important new link between fundamental surface physics and chemistry, and applied catalysis. J. Frenken and I. Groot (eds), Springer Series in Chemical Physics (Book 114), New York, ISBN-13: 978-3319444376, 350 pp.
