SUMMARY After summing up the principal existing methods of structural design on geotextile-reinforced structures, the authors describe a new method of calculation involving the l i m i t i n g equilibrium, called the "displacement method", and the LCPC CARTAGEprogramme derived from i t . This method, based on the behaviour of the geotextile as an anchored membrane, has the advantage of taking into account the deformability of the geotextile, and hence the design can be modified in relation to the stiffness J of the geotextile selected and the acceptable degree of deformation of the structure. Examples of calculations of designs using the CARTAGEprogramme shows the incidence of different parameters which may be involved : the stiffness of the geotextile, the boundary conditions at the interface, and local shearing.
THE INTERPRETATION OF TRANSIENT SIGNALS RECEIVED DURING PILE-DRIVING : THEORETICAL JUSTIFICATION AND PRACTICAL VALUE. J. F. CORTE

in Bulletin de liaison des Laboratoires des Ponts et Chauss~es Nr. 145, Sept.-Oct. 1986, 13-20 SUMMARY The acquisition of measurements of deformation and acceleration during p i l e - d r i v i n g provides valuable information for the supervision of the driving operation and the understanding of the resistance to penetration. In the f i r s t section of this a r t i c l e the author b r i e f l y sets forth, on the basis of the theory of wave propagation in elastic rods, the few relationships on which the interpretation of the signals received during driving are based. I t is then shown how, subject to certain reservations, these measurements can be used to control the operation of the p i l e - d r i v e r , to control the i n t e g r i t y of the p i l e , to evaluate the resistance during driving, and to estimate the bearing capacity of the deep foundation.
