populations by hunting has reduced their food requirements by about 50% in the open ocean and by about 75% in the Antarctic, making it likely that estimates of fish production in the open ocean are seriously low. Domestic whaling [for beluga, Delphinapterus leucas] in the Mackenzie Estuary, Northwest Territories. Fish. mar. Serv., tech. Rept, Can., 769:14 pp.

The domestic beluga hunt in the Mackenzie Estuary was surveyed 1973-1975. The number of whales harvested totaled 165,113-118, and 127-139 for each respective year. It was estimated that a number equal to two-thirds of those landed are killed but not retrieved by hunters, a situation arising from present hunting practices; suggested improvements in hunting techniques are listed and descriptions of traditional and modern hunts are provided. Figures include beluga photos and aerial photos. Western Region Fisheries and Marine Service, Department of Fisheries and the Environment, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N6, Canada.

The central Pacific coastal lagoons of Mexico have annual cycles of three distinct periods: (1) open exchange with the sea, salinities 15-34% 0; (2) isolation from the sea with high evaporation, salinities > 3 5 % o ; and (3) isolation from the sea with large freshwater input, salinities <15% 0. Trophic structure and community diversity are discussed quantitatively with regard to these periods and their corresponding environmental physiology. Includes ca. 100 references. Biological adaptations of some fish species living in the extremely turbid estuarine waters of the Indian Ocean are described, primarily relating to food procurement, reproduction and defense; uniqueness of the ichthyofauna is noted. Questions facing marine resource managers are addressed especially as they relate to fisheries. Population variability, single- and multi-species models, competition within atrophic level, plankton communities, and ecosystem energy flow are illustrated with examples such as the fisheries for California sardine, Gulf of St. Lawrence herring, and
