the title does not make this clear, the papers deal almost entirely with water quality. With this reservation, the volume can be recommended to those concerned with the estimation of the effects of pollution in the environment.
The Engineer and Society. Edited by Eric G. Semler with cartoons by A. E. Beard. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers. London. 1973. 196 pp. £3.50. This volume, produced by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, contains some forty articles by leading engineers and others (including the Duke of Edinburgh) aimed at 'giving the engineer a greater understanding of the society in which he lives, and if he has a sense of social responsibility and concern for the direction in which science and technology are going, a better opportunity of attaining his ambitions and those of the profession as a whole'. There is little specifically about pollution, except that the engineer is recognised as a potential polluter, and 'social responsibility' is shown to include concern for the environment. K.M.
