THE E U R O P E A N E N V I R O N M E N T A L MUTAGEN SOCIETY I N F O R M A T I O N SHEET NO. 2

The purpose of the Society The EEMS was founded in 1970 with two very definite aims in mind. The first was the stimulation of scientific interest and research in the fundamental and applied aspects of mutagenesis. The second was to increase public and political awareness of the potential hazards to man arising from the widespread and uncontrolled use of mutagenic agents in the environment. In order to realise these aims the EEMS holds annual meetings in Europe at which scientists from all the m e m b e r states can meet to exchange data and ideas both through formal presentations and b y informal discussion. Since the last Information Sheet in 1973, meetings have been held in Heidelberg and Florence and the next meeting, the 6th, will take place at Gernrode in the German Democratic Republic in September 27th -- October 1st, 1976. National Sections of the Society have also been formed in some countries, the latest addition being those in Hungary and the U.K. Partly as a result of this activity and that of our sister Societies in North America, Japan and India, there has been a rapid development, and proving, of more efficient, simpler test systems for potential mutagens, coupled with a move towards the construction of protocols for testing which can be put into widespread use in industry. Furthermore, interest has been stimulated in the fundamental questions of mutational mechanisms, the connection between mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, testing strategy, extrapolation from test organisms to man, and the contribution of genetic damage to human ill-health.

Relationships with other Societies Together with the American, Japanese and Indian Environmental Mutagen Societies, the EEMS constitutes the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies. One of the main purposes of this Association is the co-ordination of activities of workers in the Member Countries and the provision of special Workshops for training purposes or on particular research topics. In addition it is able to provide a register and bibliography of all chemical compound so far tested for mutagenicity and a pool of readily available expertise and experience when called u p o n to do so; their information can be obtained from J o h n S. Wassom, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Environmental Mutagen Information Centre. It also sponsors major international meeting. In

1973 the first international meeting of the Association was held in Asilomar, California; the second will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 11--15, 1977. Further sources of information and membership Nearly every European country is represented on the Council of the EEMS by one or two councillors. Your national representatives will be glad to provide further information concerning the Society. At present the composition of the Council is as follows. The Officers of the Society are: Professor B.A. Bridges, University of Sussex, England (President) Professor H. BShme *, Gatersleben, DDR (Vice-President) Dr. B.J. Kilbey, Genetics Department, Edinburgh University, Scotland (Secretary) Dr. P.H.M. Lohman, Medical Biological Lab. TNO, P.O. Box 45, Rijswijk (ZH) 2100, The Netherlands (Treasurer). Many of the current research developments, abstracts of meetings and notices concerning future meetings are published in "Mutation Research".
