NEUROMUSCULAR

The European Neuromuscular Centre (ENMC) was established in 1988 and was originally situated in Paris, but is now permanently located in Baarn, The Netherlands. It was set up with the express purpose of being a centre for co-ordinating the various medical and scientific affairs of the European Alliance of Muscular Dystrophy Associations (EAMDA). ENMC accommodates the secretariat, the Vice-President for Medical and Scientific Affairs (Mr Ysbrand Poortman) and the Research Director (Professor Alan E. H. Emery). At present it is mainly financed by AFM (Association Fran~aise contre les Myopathies) with additional support from various other member countries of EAMDA. The aims of ENMC are to facilitate and coordinate collaborative research on neuromuscular diseases between different European countries, to encourage research into new fields of interest, and to act as a clearing-house for relevant data. Special attention is currently being directed towards locating, isolating, and characterizing genes for neuromuscular diseases, encouraging the sharing and exchange of DNA

samples between research groups, the storing and banking of such material, the development of agreed diagnostic criteria for various diseases, and epidemiological studies. By supporting various workshops and seminars ENMC has already helped in the successful location of the genes responsible for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy. ENMC is able to support such research by providing grants for small limited projects, and for research workshops and seminars. It also encourages and facilitates applications to the EEC and NATO for large grants to cover major research projects. Further details of the work of the centre and research grant support may be obtained from the Vice-President or the Research Director, respectively, at the following address: European Neuromuscular Centre Lt.
