Seminars on developments in water filtration processes at InterFlow 94 Held in conjunction with the InterFlow 94 exhibition at the GMex Centre in Manchester, UK, Dr Albert Rushton chaired a well attended one-day meeting on recent developments in water filtration processes. The meeting was in an innovative format, in that delegates could attend any number of the series of presentations, which meant that they only had to pay for those presentations of most interest and relevance. This was especially attractive to those with severe constraints on their time. After introductory remarks from Albert Rushton, the first presentation was by Dr Henry Wilson (University of Bradford), who talked in general terms about the wide variety of hazards to drinking water supplies, and shed further light on several specific incidents of contamination to water supplies. Moving on to a particular technology to alleviate such problems, Dr Steve Ragan (Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons Ltd) talked about developments in activated carbons for point of use water filters, and stressed the importance of using the most appropriate filter medium for a specific problem. Professor John Gregory (University College London) then moved on to talk about the treatment of Cryptosporidium in water, and in particular the monitoring methods used to detect this increasingly common - and virulent - pathogen. A major problem with the use of membrane systems in wastewater treatment is progressive blinding of the membrane, leading to early failure. Colin Monk (University of Portsmouth) offered an approach to mitigate this blocking, by use of a novel backwashing process that permits continuous filtration. A presentation by Professor Richard Wakeman (University of Exeter) on the Howden-Wakeman fibre bed filter, then discussed the application of this system to wastewater treatment (the full paper is published in this issue, on pages 183 - 187). Following his move to the World Bank, Jan Janssens was unable to present his paper on dissolved air flotation, so instead Rodney Elms (Erofta Engineering) talked about the company’s Sandtloat process, primarily used in the paper industry. The water utility viewpoint was represented by Mike Chipps (Thames Water Utilities), who discussed the practical problems involved, and in particular the benefits from using a new type of 164

consistent with the new legislation in the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992. However, the Working Party is especially keen to produce a document that is both concise and readable, so that it will be of real value in helping existing and potential users of bag filters to identi& the key factors in ensuring high-quality installations. The Society has appreciated the unqualified support of the filtration industry, and each of the UK’s top five bag filter suppliers is represented on the Working Party. The meetings are being coordinated by Dr Clive Smith, a past Chairman of the Society, who has worked for more than 30 years in the environmental equipment industry. It is anticipated that an initial draft of the Code of Practice will be available before the end of Summer 1994. It is then planned to invite comments from a wide selection of users, regulatory authorities and other interested parties, who will be invited to participate in further meetings of the Working Party as appropriate. At its last meeting, held in Derby on 27 January, it was reported that commendable progress has been made in putting together the first draft of the Code of Practice. The first priority is to clarify issues relating to the Environmental Protection Act 1990, such as when dust monitors become mandatory, when is a stack mandatory, the provision of sampling points on compact plants, and the interpretation of Guidance Notes. Other items that will be covered at future meetings include filter media, test methods and guarantees. The Working Party welcomes the views of interested parties, who should contact Dr Clive Smith of Greentec Consultancy Services on (tel/fax) 0664 840002.
