[ 179 ] THE FLATFORD MILL FORAY 7-9 May 1948 By G. C. AINSWOR TH, Foray Secretary The twenty-ninth Spring Foray was held at the Flatford Mill Field Centre of the Council for the Promotion of Field Studies from Friday, 7 May to Sunday, 9 May 1948. Flatford Mill is situated in the parish of East Bergholt on the Suffolk bank of the River Stour about four miles from Manningtree station. Downstream the river is tidal and the valley quickly opens out into extensive salt marshes. Upstream towards Dedham (two miles away) there are fresh-water marshes and on the higher ground areas of woodland. The Centre caters for students of diverse interests, and the old mill and adjacent buildings now comprise a well-equipped laboratory, lecture rooms, library and common room, together with a refectory and dormitory accommodation. The Society is greatly indebted to the Warden, Dr E. A. R. Ennion, for his warm welcome and for all that he and his staff did as guides and advisors to make the foray both pleasurable and mycologically profitable. Friday's excursion was to Dedham where a halt was made for lunch and liquid refreshment. The outward route was on the Suffolk side of the river, the return route on the Essex bank and among other interesting finds were Clasterosporium caricinum, which had previously only been reported in this country from Norfolk, and Leptosphaeria sowerbyi on dead Scirpus lacustris culms. The next day the party went farther afield to the saltings and patches of woodland on the Essex bank of the Stour below Mistley when fine weather again added much to the day's enjoyment. Puccinia adoxae and Uromyces scillae were found in abundance, as was Entyloma ficariae. Lasiosphaeria spermoides was found in association with Armillaria mellea and a fine growth of Monilia aurea was noted. On Sunday, 9 May, the higher ground to the north-west of the Centre was worked and though the woods were dry the collections were up to the average for the spring. A complete list of the species recorded is appended. Specimens of many have been deposited at the Centre, while others may be found in the herbarium of the Commonwealth Mycological Institute, Kew. Acknowledgement is made to all those who contributed to the list, and particularly to Mr and Mrs M. B. Ellis for many records and specimens, and to Dr R. W. G. Dennis who kindly examined collections of discomycetes.
