Call for participation
The IEA World Conference '93 on Ergonomics of Materials Handling This international conference will be held on 14-18 June 1993 in Warsaw, Poland, and is being organized by the Industrial Ergonomics Technical Group of the Science & Technology Committee, International Ergonomics Association, in cooperation with Polish Ergonomics Society and the Central Institute for Labour Protection, Warsaw, under the patronage of The Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Poland. The main conference sponsors are the Human Factors Society, USA; the International Labour Organization, Geneva, Switzerland; the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA; the International Foundation for Industrial Ergonomics and Safety Research; and the Ergonomics Committee, Polish Academy of Science. This interdisciplinary Conference will review scientific knowledge about the impact of repetitive manual and automated load handling and tool manipulation on human health, comfort and safety. The consequences of the above for health care costs, prevention needs, industrial competitiveness and productivity, and quality of working life around the world will be addressed. The conference will review current status and trends in theoretical research and practice of preventing repetitive strain injuries, including low-back problems and other cumulative trauma disorders due to load handling and tool manipulation tasks. The human factors issues and safety aspects of automated materials handling in both manufacturing and service industries will also be discussed. A principal aim will be to review current research and applications in three main areas of: manual materials handling and occupational injuries; prevention of cumulative trauma disorders at work; and human factors aspects of automated material handling, tele-operation and telerobotics. The main conference themes will focus on such topics as: • • • • • • • • • •
Anthropometry and workstation design Biomechanics of low back Physiological limits Quantification of repetitive work Prevention of repetitive trauma disorders Epidemiological issues Medical intervention and rehabilitation efforts Training and strength testing Safety and accident prevention Engineering job analysis and design
• Productivity issues • Standardization efforts • Social and legal concerns • Labour-management relations • Organizational design and management • Cognitive engineering aspects • Ergonomics programmes for industry • Recognition of occupational hazards • Participatory ergonomics in material handling Future needs for research and industrial applications, current trends in government policies, regulations and standards, and labour-management relations will also be a major part of the conference agenda. The main application areas of interest include prevention of musculoskeletal disorders and improving working conditions in manufacturing, construction, warehousing, meat processing, apparel manufacturing, retail, banking, hospital care, post office operations, transportation, mining, agriculture, forestry, oil exploration, chemical processes, and other service-related industries.

Applied Ergonomics Journal The winners of the 1991 Applied Ergonomics Journal Award were announced in the UK Ergonomics Society Conference Annual Dinner on 9 April 1991. B D Ghugare, S H Adhaoo, L P Gite, A C Pandya and S L Patel won the Award for their paper "Ergonomics evaluation of a leveroperated knapsack sprayer", which was published in the August 1991 issue of the Journal, volume 22, number 4, pages 241-250.
Vol 23 No 3 June 1992
Award
The,Award of £250.00 and a certificate for each author is for the paper which best demonstrates the comprehensive application of ergonomics to a practical problem. The winning paper discussed improvements that could be made to a manual sprayer used by Indian farmers for the application of agricultural chemicals.
