and indeed somewhat misleading as in reality the book describes in detail the solution of six hypothetical case-studies in chemical engineering design suitable for final year undergraduate students. These design studies on the whole are informative and clearly worked out though on occasions the desire to display, for instructional purposes, a certain method of analysis leads to the generation of a rather artificial approach to a problem compared with industrial practice. The six case-studies comprise an exercise in the design of tank reactor sequences, an

exercise in liquid-liquid extraction, two exercises in the application of heterogeneously catalysed reaction kinetics in design, an exercise in distillation column design and one on the optimisation of design of a pipeline for long distance transport. In all cases financial as well as technical considerations are displayed and use is made of the computer where relevant. The contents of this book are to be commended as an example to those engaged in the teaching of chemical engineering design, as the case studies each involve a bringing together of a diversity of applied thought towards the solving of at least a fair simulacrum of some of the real problems which the student is likely to meet in industrial lie.
