Appointments and awards Veeco appointment Joel P Wallenstein was named Vice-President, Engineering of Veeco Instruments, Inc. In this position his responsibilities include coordination of engineering efforts, cost control procedures, and design of new products. Mr Wallenstein was forrncrly Director of Engineering with Lambda Elcctronies Corp. Lambda became a wholly owned subsidiary of Veeco in March 1966. At that time his duties included responsibility for all engineering and new product design at Lambda, a position he has held since 1963. Mr Wallenstein was born in 1922, and attended Newark College of Engineering, from which he received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1942. From that time until 1947 he was employed as a Senior engineer with the Vacuum Tube Division of International Telephone and Telegraph, where he assisted in the development of high power (1 to 100 kW) vacuum tubes. From 1947 to 1953 he served as an independent engineering consultant, specializing in the design and manufacture of specialized electronic equipment. In 1954 he fotmded Wallson Associates, a manufacturer of semiconductor test equipment, and served as its president until 1963.

D e c e m b e r 1966, saw the f o r m a t i o n of a society to foster the interests of V a c u u m Science a n d T e c h n o l o g y in Australia. This has been formcd u n d e r the auspiccs of the A u s t r a l i a n Institute of Physics a n d will be k n o w n as the " V a c u u m Physics G r o u p of the A u s t r a l i a n Institute of Physics". T h e aims of this G r o u p are to p r o m o t e the study of the physical aspects of v a c u u m a n d to p r o m o t e a d v a n c e s in V a c u u m T e c h n o l o g y ; to foster the a d o p t i o n of r e c o m m e n d e d s t a n d a r d s on v a c u u m terminology, test p r o c e d u r e a n d v a c u u m e q u i p m e n t ; to m a k e k n o w n the progress being m a d e in this c o u n t r y in V a c u u m Science, a n d to assist in the e s t a b l i s h m e n t a n d i m p r o v e m e n t of e d u c a t i o n a l facilities in this tield; to m a i n t a i n good liaison with scientists in associated disciplines; to organize meetings for this a n d o t h e r purposes, a n d to c o n t r i b u t e to The Australian Physicist items of interest to v a c u u m scientists. The Institute of Physics and the Physical Society The Council of the Institute and Society has made the following awards for 1967: Guthrie Medal and Prize to Sir James Chadwick formerly Lyon Jones Professor of Physics in the University of Liverpool and Master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, for his outstanding work in nuclear physics over a period of many years. Glazebrook Medal and Prize to Sir Charles Sykes of Firth Brown Limited, for his application of physics to metallurgical problems. Thomas Young Medal and Prize to Professor D Gabor of Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, for his work on electron and physical optics. Charles Chrec Medal and Prize to Dr J H Chapman of the Defencc Research Telecommunications Establishment, Canada, for his contribution to our knowledge of the upper atmosphere. Duddell Medal and Prize to Dr K D Froome and Mr R H Bradsell of the National Physical Laboratory for their development of the 'mekometer', used for extremely accurate measurements of distances. Charles Vernon Boys Prize to Dr A H Cook of the National Physical Laboratory for his work on the accurate measurement of certain physical constants. Bragg Medal and Prize to the late Mr D McGill x~.ho, at the time of his death in 1963, was Director of the Nuffield Foundation's school physics project, in recognition of his work in the development of new methods of teaching physics in schools. Presentations will be made in London at the Annual Dinner on the 2 May 1967.
