Since I last addressed the readers of the International Journal in an Editorial, in January 1989, much has happened that has affected the Journal in a positive manner, and I should like to take this opportunity to share some of these accomplishments with you. As a result of an editorial decision made some time ago, the time from acceptance of an article to publication has been reduced significantly. Therefore, subscribers are able to read an article within six months after it was accepted. This is a significant achievement, because all journal editors are concerned when a year or more elapses from acceptance to publication. We are able to select among high-quality manuscripts submitted from all areas of the world. Authors from some countries, however, submit more frequently than others. Aside from the United States, these countries are Nigeria, India, Turkey, Japan, Egypt, United Kingdom, Italy, Israel and Greece. The publisher reports the increasing number of library subscriptions to the Journal. This is particularly gratifying, because it is estimated that each library copy is read by a minimum of 6- 10 individuals. The Journal contributed to the XIIIth FIG0 World Congress in Singapore, this past September, in two significant ways. Each day, the abstracts for papers presented on that day were published and distributed to the registrants. Now,. the publisher plans to distribute the abstract books to major reference services, so that the abstracts will be available for electronic retrieval. In anticipation of the XIVth FIG0 Congress in Montreal, in 1994, the Editors are working with the planning committee, with the purpose of publishing the abstracts from the Montreal Congress as a supplement to the Journal, making it possible for the abstracts to be indexed and cited. Several new sections have been added to the Journal, and more are under consideration. The new sections include the ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) Technical Bulletins and Committee Opinions, guest editorials, and review articles. A new section on Social Issues in Reproductive Medicine will soon be offered. I am especially pleased that in this issue of the International Journal, we are initiating the new Letters to the Editor section. We believe this will add to the value of the Journal, by giving authors

the option of reporting short items of interest and brief case reports that can be cited and indexed. Authors interested in submitting a Letter to the Editor should follow these guidelines: (1) type the manuscript double spaced and submit it in triplicate; (2) include no more that 400 words of text, not including subheadings; include a fax number if possible on the first page of the manuscript; (3) include no more than four references and one table or figure; (4) include no more than three authors; (5) provide keywords and a brief title with the manuscript; use a concise, comprehensive writing style and summarize the clinical implications; (6) all authors should sign a copy of the Author(s) Release Form published in the Journal. During the next three years, I will have the privilege of serving as President of FIG0 as well as Editor of the International Journal. As President, I will visit many of your national societies and enter into a dialogue with you about the activities of FIG0 and our goals for the future, and I will welcome your comments and suggestions for ways that we can strengthen the Journal. I look forward to meeting many of our contributors and continuing our efforts to expand the services provided by the Journal to FIG0 and to our readers.
