BOOK REVIEW A BIOCHEMICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF HUMAN HAND JOINTS By Jurgen Koebke. Vol. 80 in Advances in Anatomy Embryology and Cell Biology. 85 pages, 50 Figs including B and W photographs, Index, References. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, Tokyo, 1983 DM54. ISBN 3-540-12438-I. Approx. &15. The title of this publication is somewhat misleading until it is pointed out that it is a revised version of a University thesis and published under the series heading of Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology. The joints considered are the radiocarpal, the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb and the metacarpophalangeal joints. Even here the focus of attention is directed primarily upon the articular cartilages. Within these parameters the author offers an excellent study on the relationships between structure and stresses upon the joints. This relationship is also considered in the light of what is found compared with what is to be expected in the cartilage on injury and ageing . This work will be of considerable interest to those specialising in the various arthropathies but other potential readers should not be misled by the rather broad sweep of the title. K. M.
