THE JUDSON C. HICKEY SCIENTIFIC WRITING AWARD

The Editorial Council of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry announces the seventh annual Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award competition. This award honors Dr. Hickey’s distinguished career as Editor of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and his contributions to dental education, research, and administration.

The annual award of $5000.00 is divided into three categories (Research/Clinical Sciences article $2500; Clinical Report $1500; Technical article $1000) and will be granted to the primary author in each category, respectively, of the most outstanding manuscript submitted for competition between September 1 and September 30 (postmarked).

Research and Clinical Sciences article 1. The manuscript must be of significant interest and demonstrate clinical relevance to readers of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. 2. The manuscript must be scientifically valid and technically correct, standardized, statistically valid, and must demonstrate examiner reliability and replicability. The manuscript must also have defined criteria, defined measures, the correct sample size, and adequate controls. 3. The manuscript must meet the uniform requirements for publication, be properly organized and be written in a clear and concise manner. The references must be accurate and current. The title must be specific and relevant. The Abstract must summarize the content of the manuscript. The Abstract must state the problem, the study’s purpose, the material and methods, the results, and conclusions. The conclusions must be justified on the basis of the data presented. 4. Illustrative material must be of professional quality with adequately descriptive legends. Any microscopic photographs must have units of measure on the photograph.

Clinical Report 1. Report clinical treatment procedures of a patient(s) that is of special interest and provides useful information on patient treatment procedures to the readers of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. 2. The report should be no longer than six double-spaced typewritten pages. The report should be supplemented by no more than eight professional quality descriptive illustrations. The illustrations must have adequately descriptive legends. 3. The report must meet the uniform requirements for publication in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, be properly organized and be written in a clear and concise manner. The references must be accurate and current. The title must be specific and relevant.

Technical article The description of the procedures should state the objective of the technique, give an orderly chronologic description of the procedures, make appropriate reference to alternative techniques, and summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the technique. These articles can often be written in a step-by-step “cookbook” manner. The technical article should have no more than 16 quality descriptive illustrations.

Additional criteria A. In addition to the existing criteria for manuscript acceptance by The JPD (see Information for Authors), the submission must be original material not previously published. The manuscript must also be identified as one entered specifically for the competition. It may not be related to material submitted in fulfillment of any advanced academic degree (MS, PhD, etc.) or required for any advanced education program, specialty board examination, or as part of any government or privately funded project. B. Manuscripts that meet the stated criteria must be submitted between September 1 and September 30 (postmarked) so they can be reviewed between October 1 and December 31 of each year by a committee chaired and appointed by the Journal’s current editor. The winning manuscripts (research / clinical sciences article; clinical report; technical article) will be published at the earliest possible date. C. The recipient will receive a check and a plaque which will be presented at a Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry’s sponsoring organization meeting if the recipient so chooses. D. No award will be given (research / clinical sciences article, clinical report, or technique article) if the Award Committee considers that the manuscripts submitted for the award do not meet the criteria for the award. E. All manuscripts submitted in competition for the Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award will be considered for publication in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry if not selected for the award. F. The Editor, Assistant Editors, and members of the Editorial Council are not eligible to enter the competition.
