The Mail Bag I read the Allergy and Asthma Connection in your most recent issue of Asthma Magazine on the topic of allergy immunotherapy. I was surprised to learn that children who are prone to asthma or those who have it in their families may have a lower likelihood of developing it if they have immunotherapy for their allergies. Does this mean that small children with allergies should undergo immunotherapy? And how long would they need to keep it up? I know that this is a fairly new finding, but I am wondering if any guidelines have been developed yet about which children should be considered for it. It does seem somewhat traumatic since it involves injections, but if it is effective, it may be worth it. I would like to read more on this topic in your magazine. Thanks.

I found your article about the history of asthma treatment through the years fascinating. (January/February 2004) I am sixty-three years old myself and have had asthma since I was a small child. I have certainly seen many improvements in treatment over my lifetime, but I didn’t realize how primitive the treatments were prior to that time. For example, we know today that smoke is such an asthma trigger, yet asthma cigarettes were an accepted treatment. I suppose it makes sense that burning a substance was one way it could be inhaled. Your article was enlightening about how far we have come in a relatively short time with our modern treatments. Even though today we feel we have a pretty good understanding of the disease, it does make you wonder whether in the next couple of decades we may look back on our treatments today and consider them to be simplistic and ineffective. I enjoy your magazine because I don’t know of any other source where I could read an in depth article such as this one on a topic that is so personally interesting to me. I was interested to read your article entitled “Can You Prevent Your Child From Developing Asthma?” We have a strong history of asthma and allergies in our family, and I have a two year old who, so far, is asthma-free. Although I have missed the boat on some of the ideas in the article (eg, exposing children to pets in the first year of life and breastfeeding), I do feel I was able to get some actionable steps from the article. At least I can feel as though I am doing something. Thank you for the insight. Laura Gibbons New York, NY
