Abstract The Mellanby Review Award is named after Kenneth Mellanby, the founding editor of Environmental Pollution. The award is made on a biennial basis to a distinguished scientist in one of the many areas that make up the broad field of environmental pollution. The recipient is asked to write a critical review paper that will be published in the journal and will also receive a US $1500 bursary and travel funds to attend a meeting where the paper will be presented in a public lecture and an award certificate presented. # 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. I am very pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2002 Mellanby Review Award is Professor Philip S. Rainbow, Keeper of Zoology, The Natural History Museum, London, UK. This award recognizes his distinguished record of achievement in research on the biological significance of essential and non-essential trace metals in estuarine and marine crustaceans. He is also well-known for his work in biomonitoring trace element availability in crustaceans in estuarine and coastal waters, using barnacles (Hong Kong), amphipods (The Baltic), and oysters (Brazil). Professor Rainbow’s work has resulted in 135 publications in books, journals and conference proceedings. Professor Rainbow received his PhD from the University of Wales, Bangor, in 1975. He then began his distinguished career as a Lecturer, progressing to Reader and then Professor of marine biology at Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW), University of London. He was Head of the School of Biological Sciences, QMW, from 1995 to 1997. He is currently Keeper of Zoology at The Natural History Museum, London,

UK. Professor Rainbow is also a Research Fellow at the Swire Institute of Marine Science, Hong Kong, and a Council member of the Linnean Society of London. Professor Rainbow will give his Mellanby Review Award Lecture in a special session of the North American Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) annual meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, in early November 2002.
