Neuromethods, Vol. 10: analysis of Psychiatric Drugs by A. A. Boulton, G. B. Baker, and R.T. Coutts (eds.) The Humana Press, Clifton, N. J., 1988, £75.10 This hefty volume reviews most modern techniques for the analysis actions of drugs used by the psychiatrist today. The basic background of and rationale for their effects are systematically presented. Relevant factors such as lipophilicity and protein binding are examined. Protocols for isotope derivative assays are given. The chapter on gas-liquid chromatography clarifies the pitfalls the unwary has to avoid, and the same goes for the chapters on gas-chromatography - mass spectrometry and HPLC. Following these chapters, which are not only ofinterest to the (biological) psychiatrist and (clinical) toxicologist, but also to the laboratory technician, the subjects of radioreceptor assay, immuno assay, neurochemical screening, animal models, brain and platelet high affinity, binding of anti-depressants and, finally, structure-activity relationships are dealt with. This all-round text testifies vividly to the soundness of introducing scientific techniques in the field of psychiatric therapy. Unreservedly recommended reading. G.W. BRUYN

The NMDA Receptor, J.C. Watkins and G.L. Collinbridge (eds.), IRL Press, Oxford Univ. Press, Oxford, 1989, £25.00 This compact monograph is a welcome text providing a wealth of up-to-date detail for a modest price. The subject of the NMDA receptor is reviewed in 17 chapters, written by acknowledged experts. Not only the chemical and neuropharmacological, but also the physiological, clinical neurological and neuropsychologieal aspects of the NMDA receptor are lucidly and succinctly dealt with. This reviewer could only discern a single omission which the interested neurologist might expect to find: a review of the evidence for the reeeptor's role in Huntington's chorea, migraine, and cerebral ischemic penumbras. The editors and the publishers succeeded in getting the text of the April International Symposium on the market within half a year. Unreservedly recommended reading. G.W. B RUYN

Nerve Compression Syndromes, Diagnosis and Treatment, by Robert M. Szabo (ed.), Slack Incorporated, New York, 1989 A well-produced, most reasonably priced and lavishly illustrated multiauthor volume, which provides an exhaustive review of the various nerve compression syndromes that the neurologist may be confronted with. Even the often missed or misdiagnosed quadrilateral tunnel syndrome is included which betrays the care of the editor. To be unreservedly recommended as a handy reference book on the desk of the practising neurologist. G.W. BRUYN
