Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery JANUARY 2004

EDITORIAL The people behind the publication
A s the new year begins, it is a great opportunity for me to highlight the success that we have experienced and to acknowledge the people who have continued to make Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery one of the premier otolaryngology journals. The success of the Journal is dependent on the many people who facilitate the dayto-day operations, and it is my pleasure and privilege to take this space to acknowledge those individuals. The most obvious and significant accomplishment for the Journal this year has been a dramatic improvement in the efficiency and speed of the editorial process, bringing both domestic and international submissions to publication in a remarkably short time. Despite over a 30% increase in the number of submitted articles, we now publish most of the articles within 4 to 5 months from the time of submission, as long as there are not extensive revisions. This is consistent with the publication times of the most efficient journals in the industry and is the best of the otolaryngology publications. This efficiency is expected to improve further as we initiate online submissions and reviews with the use of a program entitled Editorial Manager that we hope to launch in the early part of 2004. A great accomplishment for us has been a continued improvement in our Citation Index over the past few years despite the larger number of article submissions and the reduction in time of editorial review and publication. We remain 1 of the 2 most highly read otolaryngology journals as we bring state of the art clinical care and cutting-edge research to a diverse group of medical practitioners and scientists.
As our number of submissions to the Journal increase, the pressure to review them increases proportionately. Our ability to review and publish so large a number of articles requires the hard work of the hundreds of reviewers who work with us. Listed below are the many volunteer reviewers who have participated in manuscript review over the last year. These people have committed their time, knowledge, and experience graciously and with no visible appreciation other than this listing. To me and to the Editorial Board, these individuals are the strength of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. They are leaders in their fields in the development and dissemination of basic science and clinical knowledge. It is truly a privilege to have them review and evaluate our manuscripts. They are the backbone not only of our Journal but also of peer-review publishing, for without them it does not happen. Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery continues to have the great fortune of having many of the premier otolaryngologists and related specialists serve on its Editorial Board. I would like to thank the Associate Editors for their hard work and diligence and the members of the Editorial Board for prioritizing the work of the Journal despite their multiple other responsibilities and commitments. A number of Editors are completing their terms on the Editorial Board. Your efforts over the years are what have made Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery such an outstanding Journal. Please take the time to view the names of all of the editors on our editorial pages in this issue. Many of you have had the opportunity to com1

municate with our Managing Editor, Louanne Wheeler. Any of you who have published, reviewed, or edited for the Journal know that she is the person that really makes the Journal work. She is the one who really takes care to assure that manuscripts are processed efficiently, with great care and quality, and keeps the Journal office running smoothly. She also takes the responsibility to make sure that any glitches are resolved and allows this complex process to run so seamlessly. I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with Louanne over the past 3 years, and I would be lost without her. I would also like to recognize Sheila Bodner who has done a terrific job in assisting Louanne in the Journal office. Another great accomplishment of the Journal has been the ability to attract the best articles not only from the United States but also from all over the world. We have truly become an international Journal. The ability for Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery to be so remarkably successful in attracting such excellent manuscripts from all over the world has primarily been through the work of Eugene Myers, MD, our International Editor and his Editorial Coordinator, Matthew Newton. It is no easy task to process hundreds of international articles with the inherent difficulties of language, time, and distance. Dr Myers has fostered an environment of worldwide communication and has allowed us to bring the most important and contemporary knowledge and science in otolaryngology throughout the world to the stage in our Journal. I cannot begin to recognize how important his efforts have been to our success. We have been extremely fortunate to work with one of the premier medical publishing companies, Mosby/Elsevier, and it is my pleasure to acknowledge the many outstanding people there who are responsible for the publication of the Journal. I would particularly like to recognize Terrie DuHadway, who for most of my tenure has been the Publisher, and the equally supportive and knowledgeable Regina Klein who has assumed that position midyear, along with Peggy Simpson, Senior Issue Manager. Their knowledge of the publishing process and their experience with a number of peer-reviewed scientific journals have been invaluable to me. Their efforts are only the tip of the iceberg and although I cannot mention the names

of all the individuals, I would like to extend my thanks to the entire Mosby publishing team and to the many staff members of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery who contribute to make each issue happen. There are a number of people who have been particularly important in allowing me to be successful as Editor. David Nielsen, MD, the Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and Jonas Johnson, MD, and Jennifer Derebery, MD, the former and current Presidents, have continued to prioritize the activity of the Journal in the educational commitment of the Academy. They have been remarkably supportive with their advice and actions; their efforts ensure that we continue to pursue excellence in the quality and ethics of our publication. I am also thankful to the Officers and Boards of Directors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy for their continued support and guidance. Over the past 3 years as Editor, I have often stated that the 2 most important groups that are critical to fulfilling our Mission and publishing successfully are our authors and you, our readers. I recognize that our authors are the best and the brightest in our field and that they have options to submit their work to a number of different and strong journals in otolaryngology and related specialties. They choose to send their work to us for a variety of reasons, including the high quality and visibility of the Journal, our principles of ethical publishing, our strong Editorial Board and policies, and in support of the sponsoring Academies. I am very thankful that they continue to support our Journal with their knowledge, and I will continue to strive to make our Journal a jewel for the publication of their work. Without our subscribers and readers there would be no real reason for the Journal to exist. Your support for the Journal and its authors is what makes my job so rewarding, and for this I thank you. Each year, I try to remind all of us why we work so diligently to produce a Journal that will provide information that can truly make a difference. This is best stated by our Mission statement that reads, “The Mission of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery is to publish contemporary, ethical, clin-

ically relevant information in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery (ear, nose, throat, head, and neck disorders) that can be used by otolaryngologists, scientists, and related specialists to improve patient care and public health.” As we enter 2004, this Mission compels me, the Editorial Board, and our Publisher to strive to continue to strengthen the Journal and to continue our emphasis on the importance of ethical publishing. My aim is to continue to provide the
information that is indispensable to your practices, your continued professional growth, and in many case, your research. Please feel free to communicate with me at any time to help me accomplish these goals. Thank you for your support in 2003 and all my best in the New Year. Michael S. Benninger, MD Editor
