BOOK REVIEWS The Pharmacologic Basis of Anesthesiology. Basic Science by T. A. Bowdle, and Practical Appllcatlom-Edited A. Horita and E. D. Kharasch. 779~~. 1994. ChurchillLivingston, New York. $99.

gen induced arthritis; myasthenia and epitope specific neonatal tolerance; T cell reactivity; antiribosomal antibodies in SLE; stress proteins; natural autoantibodies.

This book focuses on the unique set of drugs that defines the speciality of anesthesiology. The 47 contributing authors deal with: opioids, local anaesthetics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, etomidate and propofol, ketamine, neuromuscular blockers and antagonists, inhalation anesthetics, anesthetic adjuvants. Each section considers the basic pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacology and applications of the series of drugs. The treatment is very thorough with good tables and references. An excellent and valuable contribution to the subject.

Double ReSpolt%? ModSem-Interferons, Biological Stranded RNA and 2’.5’-Olinoarlenvlateg_Edited bv W. E. G. Muller and H. C. -Schroder. 275 pp. 1994. Springer Verlag, Berlin. DM 198.

Pharmacokinetics and Drugs-Edited by P. G. Welling and L. P. Balant. Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, Volume 110. 537 pp. 1994. Springer Verlag, Berlin. DM 528. The last volume on pharmacokinetics (P) in this series was published in 977. Since then the importance of P and the P of population kinetics has increased. The topics reviewed are: P and drug discovery and development; radioimmune assay of drugs; mass spectrometry and P, biotechnology products; scaling up from in vitro to organ and whole body; gastrointestinal transport of peptides, protein drugs and prodrugs; stereoselectivity in metabolic reactions of toxication and detoxication; inter-ethnic differences; clinical relevance of pharmaco-genetics; role of environmental factors in P; time course of drug effects; future trends in P; peptide and protein design; toxicokinetics; population approach; PET and P; in uivo imaging in drug design; drug data analysis using personal computers. Antimicrobial Susceptibiity Testing: Critical Issuea for tbe

-Edited by J. A. Poupard, L. R. Walsh and B. Kleger. 191 pp. 1994. Plenum Press, New York. $69.50. It is necessary to test the efficacy of agents that attack microbes. This book deals with: the history of antibiotic testing; testing methods; interpretive probiems; clinician utilization of the data; how often to test; National standards; non-traditional approaches; medical informatics; new methods; nucleic acid probes; clinical laboratory regulation; FDA criteria; current issues. Since bacteria develop antibiotic resistance almost as quickly as we develop new antibiotics, accurate testing becomes more and more important.

Biological response modifiers are increasingly used in viral and cancer therapy. Alterations of the immune systems are the primary symptoms of HIV infection and so therapies directed to the modulation of the immune responses are under intense evaluation. The interferon (IFN) based natural antiviral protection system, together with double stranded (ds) RNA and the oligoadenylates are of practical clinical use as heterologous immunomodulators. The book deals with: activation of dsRNA dependent kinase; dsRNA as gene activators; viral dependent phosphorylation of dsRNA kinase; 2-5A and virus infection; 2-5A and HIV infection; 2-5A synthetase in autoimmune BB rats; regulation of HIV reulication bv IFN; transmembrane siznallina by IFN.

Tbe Metnbotropic Glutamate Receptors-Edited by P. J. Conn and J. Patel. 277 pp. 1994. Human Press, New Jersey. $99.50 (export $109.50). A large family of G-protein linked glutamate receptors or metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) exist. These can fine tune the fast responses of the glutamate ligand gated cation channels. mGluR are involved in motor control, learning and memory, development plasticity, vision, sensory processing, nociception, regulation of cardiac function, epileptogenesis and responses to neuronal injury. The chapters deal with mGluR and; molecular cloning; pharmacological properties; 2nd messengers; distribution in the brain; modulation of ionic currents; regulation of synaptic transmission; long lasting modulation; regulation of neuronal circuits; neural degeneration; plasticity.

Inummobiology of Proteins and Peptides. VII. Unwanted Immune Respomea-Edited by M. Z. Atassi. 231 pp. 1994. Plenum Press, New York. $75. Stress proteins and autoantibodies can lead to unwanted immune responses, allergies and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus erythematous, autoimmune type I diabetes. The topics discussed are: mast cells and IgE synthesis; structure and function of IgE receptor; IgE, Fc-FceRI interaction; colla-

The pharmaceutical industry has been very successful over the last decade. To remain successful it requires new drugs and these have to be marketed. The present book gives detailed information of possible careers. It deals with; (1) Background [global medicine, U.K. trends, Schools of Pharmacy, academic clinical research, nursing]; (2) Pm-clinical research [drug discovery, toxicology, pharmacist in health care]; (3) Clinical research [physicians, clinical research associate, clinical pharmacology, statisticians, data management, quality assurance, contract research U.S.A. and Europe]; (4) Pharmaceutical medicine [product registration and regulation, pharmaco-epidemiology, medical information, medical writing, drug regulation, pharmaceutical law, pharmacoeconomics];
