The Teaching Process. Theory and Practice in Nursing Van Hoozer et al Appleton-Century-Crofts 1986 33Opp Illus ISBN:&83855883552 426.70 Here is the book that nurse education has long awaited. A real treasure store of educational theory, apphed to nursing, and all research-based. It is excellently presented, and takes the reader through the teaching-learning process. The six chapters provide information on learning theories and the teaching role of the nurse; instructional design; learning strategies; clinical teaching and learning; client education; and teaching-learning evaluation. All include objectives, nursing examples, post tests, suggested applications, and research references or suggestions for future research. At L26.70 the price may deter some potential purchasers, but it is certainly value for money ~ a resource that will enable, and very likely motivate the reader to create optimal learning experiences and design curricular teaching-learning strategies based upon educational research. I highly recommend it as a must for all school of nursing libraries, and an invaluable resource for all Nurse Teachers, Curriculum Planners, and Teacher Students. SHEILA

Nursing Models and the Nursing Process P Aggleton & H Chalmers MacMillan 1986 118pp Illus ISBN: &333-41665-l 412.00 (hardback) L5.95 (paperback) The authors state that their ‘aim in producing this book is to introduce practising nurses to a number of models of nursing which can act as guidelines for the use of the nursing process’, and in this they succeed. It is however important to stress that this is an introduction only, to the main features of some of the better known models of nursing. It is a very readable and informative book, preparing the way for a closer and more in-depth study. It is drawn from the series of articles by the authors that appeared in the nursing press in 1984 1985. I was looking forward to this publication in the hope that there would be further development of the ideas expressed in these’ articles, and that there would thus be more help for the nurse who wished to use a model of nursing to direct her/his nursing
care; however that guidance is lacking in this rather superficial description of the models of Roper Logan Orem, Riehl and and Tierney, Johnson, Roy, Rogers. This book is essentially for the nurse who has never used models of nursing. The learner. who is probably using only one model in early training would find this publication helpful to increase her/his awareness of the existence of a variety ot guidelines for nursing which meet differing patient/client needs. Perhaps this book has appeared rather late for the many trained nurses who arc now at the stage of wanting assistance in analysing and evaluating existing theories. PAMELA J RKXARL)~O~ SRX SCM R.?v’7

This is a most stimulating and challenging book which highlights the political issues inherent in health education. The information is clearly and concisely presented to ensure the reader’s interest is maintained and traditionally held views of health education are challenged. There arc 11 chapters written by 14 contributors, with the subject of each chapter reflecting the theoretical knowledge and practical experience of the author. The writing style throughout is based on radical critique which is skilfully supported by the authors’ rationale and accessible up-to-date reference lists. It is not a book for those requiring information on health education practice per se, but rather for those open to critical analysis and keen to question the rationale of conventional health education. This very reasonably priced book is published at a time when nurses are being encouraged to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes as health educators and their awareness of the relationship between the political and socio-economic determinants of health, making it compulsory reading for all student and trained nurses.
