io n am in , an ion-exchange-resin that is an anorectic w ith a side effect th a t interrupts sleep, an action very sim ilar to am p h etam ines. H ow ever, u n lik e a m p h eta m in e s, w hich are class II drugs, phenterm ine is a class IV d ru g , h a v in g relative low p o ten tial for abuse. I used phenterm ine on w eekends. My w eig h t fell from a chubby 200 lb to a reasonable 175. T h e d ru g becam e a tool to add extra hours for w eek en d ch o res. It d id n o t p ro d u c e e u p h o ria n o r was it used as a “party d ru g .” Yes, I ordered phenterm ine, from a legitim ate dental su p p ly house, and used it. I did n ot feel th a t I was com m itting a crim e w orthy of the disgrace it has b ro u g h t. . . . T h e local police chief heard of my p red ic am e n t, from a p h arm a cist, a n d

suddenly I was the center of a local d ru g investigation. Next, the State Board of D ental Exam iners stepped in to reh ab il itate me. I signed a consent order v o lu n tarily because I love dentistry, and I am a good dentist w ho has h ad 18 years of practice w ith no previous problem s. T h e pu b licatio n of my disciplinary action by the state b oard ’s new sletter was definitely the m ost painful. T h e state board n ot only m ailed its new sletter to all my peers but also to a n o n p racticin g hygienist w ho is a relative of the ow ner of my hom etow n new spaper, w ho m ailed it directly to the new spaper. . . . Yes, I was front page new s—“D entist D isciplined” w ith all the gory details. W ith this front page article, my p u n ish m en t n o t only affected me, b u t now included my fam ily, wife, and b rother w ho is also a d en tist. I le arn ed h u m ility quickly. My colleagues sh o u ld be w arned of the consequences of error ju d g m en ts in the use of the pow er we have in o u r DEA certificate and the way products are legitim ately offered by our dental su p p ly catalogues.

I feel th at changes should be m ade to protect us from ourselves. I th in k th a t o u r DEA certificate should be lim ited to those substances th a t we can use in o u r practice an d the products advertised by our p ro fessional m ail order houses sh o u ld be lim ited to products th at are “in the scope of dentistry.” I am truly sorry for my stu p id actions an d prom ise, if perm itted, to co n tin u e an o th er troublefree 18 years of dentistry.
