Unlike the August weather in England the nitride-based optoelectronics industry continues to hot up. Just reaching boiling point is the race for commercially viable blue laser diodes, To date the front running has been made by Nichia's GaN on sapphire solution, but few of you will have escaped the news of Cree Research's lune breakthrough using a SiC substrate.
f course the Cree laser is pulsed n o t continuous wave, but it should only be a matter o f time before a such a device is perfected. Fujitsu also recently e n t e r e d the ring with their r o o m temperature GaN blue laser o n a SiC substrate, fabricated using conventional low-pressure MOVPE. Again the device is only pulsed b u t Fujitsu is claiming a stable operation o f m o r e than five hours. O n e thing is for sure: a d d i n g m o r e horses to the race should spice things u p a bit. What we really n e e d t h o u g h is a GaN substrate. Difficulties associated with bulk growth o f this material means that this is still a long way off. However, Epitronics reckon they have a solution to the p r o b l e m using the established sapphire base - - turn to page 4. T h e debate over the merits o f the different substrates for blue devices has been well covered in this magazine, as has the nature o f the market for these devices. For the definitive reference on this e m e r g i n g market I urge you to consider o u r latest report, Gallium Nitride and Related Wute Bandgap Materials 1996-2001. A r e p o r t prospectus is available from Alistair Davies at the III-Vs Review office. By now you should have received o u r second edition o f the Compound Semiconductor Industry Direaory ~ if you are

Now for a an a n n o u n c e m e n t a b o u t staffing at the IIIVs Review headquarters that concerns yours truly. By the time you read this I will have left Elsevier after four years with the company. Fear n o t though, as the responsibility for editing the magazine falls to the capable hands of Mr Simon Picketing. Simon is a very experienced m e m b e r o f Elsevier Advanced Technology's editorial team and I am confident that the publication's success will continue u n d e r his c o m m a n d . T h e two years I have been working for III-Vs Review have been great fun, and I have enjoyed meeting some of the 'characters' o f this industry. I wish you and the magazine c o n t i n u e d success for the future.
