Short Book Reviews Bar, M., Fischer, K. and Hertel, G. Leistungsfahigkeit Qualitat Zuverlassigkeit Transpress VEB, 1988, 231 pages. Highly mathematical text in German about Efficiency, Quality and Reliability. Nine chapters cover: problem definition, system p e r f o r m a n c e and reliability, development of models, models of service systems with dissimilar channels, performance-reliability models, reliability models of systems with complex failure and maintenance mechanisms, relationship between reliability and service models, unified service and reliability models,and handling unstable service systems. Ikeda, N. and Watanabe, S. Stochastic Differential Equations and Diffusion Processes Elsevier, North- Holland, 1989, US$147.00, xvi + 555 pages. The first edition of this book was published in 1980 and in the present volume the chapters on Brownian Motion and Malliavin calculus have been expanded. The remaining contents include Stochastic Integrals and I t t ' s formula. Stochastic calculus and differential equations,diffusion processes on manifolds and theorems on comparison. It is likely that the book will have appeal to a limited number of O.R. workers. Kollintzas, T. (ed.) The Rational Expectations Equilibrium Inventory Model Springer-Verlag, 1989, DM52.00, x + 269 pages.

Order Backlog. The contribution are not very closely connected and use different symbols making each paper self contained.

Eight papers presented at a conference in 1987 covering Algorithms for solving linear programmes in O(n L) operations and using a primal-dual interior point. An extension of Karmarker's algorithm for Quadratic Programming is given. A projective method for the linear feasibility problem, a NewtonType method for the Centre of a Polytype, comparison of Simplex and an Interior Method, Pricing Criteria and Pathways to the Optimal Set in Linear Programming are also treated. Shetty, B. Network Optimization and Applications J.C. Baltzer AG, 1989, 303 pages. This book consists of 12 original papers and starts with a major review of dynamic network flows. The other contributions cover the auction algorithm for the transportation problem, almost sure critical paths, and expert systems in networks. Rounding in tables, optimum deployment of weapons, and investment planning are areas of application which are covered. The remaining sections consider the reconstruction of shortest paths, reoptimisation procedures, basis suppression, k-shortest and constrained shortest paths and a Langrangian approach to constrained networks.

Six essays by a number of authors on the subjects of The Linear Rational Expectation Equilibrium Inventory Model; Inventories and price fluctuations; Temporal aggregation and the Stock Adjustment model; A model for the American Petroleum Industry; Seasonality and production smoothing;
