/. F. Jelenko, Jr., Chairman Professional and Laboratory Relations Committee American Dental Trade Association it was fine of you to acknowledge the efforts of the American Dental Trade Association through the article “ Operation Fingerprint” in the December issue of the journal of THE AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION. I know this public acknowledgment will be greatly appreciated by the members of our Association and will make us want to do even more. It should be a great assistance to those who are working hard on our campaign for funds for the American Fund for Dental Edu cation and other projects which will mean greater cooperation with the profession that we serve. Ben White, Jr. President White-Rafert Co. Terre Haute, Ind.

What does a number mean? That’s a good question. But three numbers will go down in the history of the American Dental Trade As sociation representing a hallmark of progress that will, I can assure you, be accepted as a challenge to deserve it. I have reference to the numbers 774, better identified as the page bearing that number in the December issue of the ADA Journal and the editorial, “Operation Fingerprint.” We do what we do for dentistry first be cause we love it, second because we believe in it, and third, because we want to be a part of it. And to have our efforts receive the official recognition of the American Den tal Association in its bible, authored by its editor, is the finest compliment we have ever received. Please know that we accept your most ap preciated tribute to us as a challenge to im prove still further, our efforts in the interest of dentistry. L. M. Anderson Jr. President American Dental Trade Association

I was extremely disturbed to read in the Journal of the American Dental Association, November, 1964, that two Negro colleagues had been denied membership in the Third District Dental Society of North Carolina. If, as the report intimates, their rejection was based solely on the fact that they are colored, then I hereby register my deep indig nation and protest at this act. It behooves us. as individuals and as an or ganized society concerned with public service and welfare to uphold the high moral and ethical standards of our profession and not allow this act to go unanswered. If we as members of a group do not disavow an act of bigotry or immorality made by rep resentatives of our organization, then we, by our failure to speak out and act, become part ners and party to it. I therefore, respectfully suggest and submit that a resolution be written into the laws of our society: “That any component or constituent group, or district of the ADA that discriminates or denies membership to any individual or group Although I had been told of your fine testi because of race, religion, or creed should be monial to “ Operation Fingerprint” and the dropped and disassociated from our national ADTA, I did not see your editorial until to organization.” day when my copy of the journal arrived. If we do not raise our voices and act ac (I guess the delay can be traced to a combi cordingly, we must accept the stigma of nation of our being out in the hinterlands bigotry equally with the guilty. and the Christmas rush.) Civil Rights is the law of the land. Let us I can’t tell you how proud we are of the .begin to support and enforce it in our daily tribute you have paid to our Association.
