proceedings published

1PAT 77, tile first conference oil Ion Plating and Allied Techniques to take place in Europe, was a great success, attracting 200 scientists and engineers from 12 countries. The conference presented the latest developments in vacuum deposition techniques for metals and compounds in 29 papers from many of the world's foremost authorities. The techniques of ion plating, ionized cluster beam technology, rf sputtering, sputter ion plating, ion implantation, and the activated reactive evaporation process were extensively reviewed. Contributed papers presented reflected the wide range of applications for these techniques for functional and decorative coatings. The applications include corrosion protection, tribology, tool and turbine coatings, batteries, solar energy, nuclear power, electronic components, displays and optical coatings.

Coatings include titanium, gold, aluminium, tin, copper, cadmium, lead, Co Cr AI Y, titanium carbide, nitrides, oxides, ceramics and carbon films. The proceedings, which contain all papers presented (250 pp) are available from CEP Consultants Ltd, 14a Henderson Row, Edinburgh EH3 5DH Telephone 031 557 2478.

Price: U K £15, elsewhere US $35 (prices include postage, airmail, and packing).

The sixth Czechoslovak conference on electronics and vacuum physics Bratislava, Czechoslovakia 23-26 August 1976

The Slovak Technical University at Bratislava in cooperation with the Institute of Electrotechnology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Comenius University offered their hospitality to 250 participants (I 14 from abroad) from 15 countries. The scientific programme of the conference was arranged in plenary sessions and four special sessions (thin film technology, surface physics and technology, physical electronics and vacuum physics). In the plenary sessions there were presented 10 review lectures. Among them it is necessary to mention lectures by Professor E W MiJller (USA) on the ion microscope with an atomic probe with high resolution, by Professor Ch Weissmantel (GDR) on the preparation and properties of sputtered thin semiconductor films. A Venema (Netherlands) informed us about the activities of the International Union for Vacuum Science Technique and Applications (IUVSTA) and about the series of slides for the teaching of vacuum fundamentals designed by the Dutch Vacuum Society for the IUVSTA. Professor J Groszkowski (Poland) devoted his review lecture to methods of measuring ultrahigh vacuum, with special emphasis on recent work concerned with hot cathode ionization gauges. P Arifov (USSR) devoted his lecture to the interaction of atoms with the solid surface. E Kansky (Yugoslavia) gave informaVacuum/volume 27/number 12.

tion about the measurement of very low pressures in the range from 10 -3o to 10 -4o torr. M Roberts (Great Britain), P Degras (France) and J Miiller (Czechoslovakia) all gave lectures (separately) about the problems of surface physics, including new spectroscopic methods for the study of the reactivity of surfaces, the sorption properties of metal surfaces and the anisotrophy of the work function of metals. Among the most interesting lectures presented as invited papers in special sessions, it is necessary to mention the lecture given by Professor J Yarwood (Great Britain) on absolute calibration of ion gauges in ultrahigh vacuum and a lecture devoted to the application of clean vacuum in research and industry by H Adam (FRG). The organizers prepared a book of about 100 abstracts from the lectures and original contributions presented. The book of abstracts was made available to participants before the conference. The full texts of the invited lectures is to be published during 1977 and will be distributed by the organizers of the conference. The conference was carefully and successfully prepared, and the participants left Bratislava with a very good feeling about the success of the international cooperation and the hospitality of Bratislava's organizers.
