Dr Scrutton and his co-editors present a set of 15 papers plus 2 extended abstracts dealing with the relationships existing between tectonics, sedimentation and water masses development in the North Atlantic Ocean. Most of the results arise from investi ations performed through the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the Ocean Drilling Program, or derived from exploration research conducted by oil companies. This approach gives way to a very interesting piece of work, although somewhat heterogeneous considering the wide scope of the scientific field considered. The general or regional aspects of the structural evolution and related sedimentary expression of the North Atlantic region are especially emphas~ed, whereas the paleoceanographic ts are much more partially considered
