Editorial

The third year in Barcelona On December 30, 2001 Dame Sheila left us. Her passing away had a great impact on all the hepatologists round the world. It was of particular sadness for us here at Journal of Hepatology as Dame Sheila was the first Editor-in-Chief. I can sincerely say that her ideas, editorial policy, and philosophy towards our journal still remain intact today. During the year 2002, two new sections were introduced; ‘Milestones in Liver Disease’, and ‘Beyond the Journal’ both of which have developed according to our expectations. They have been well received by the readers. ‘Milestones in Liver Disease’ has been very much enjoyed by the younger readership whilst ‘Beyond the Journal’ gives the reader the opportunity to see outstanding papers published outside the Journal discussed by experts – such a section was lacking in our Journal. I would like to take advantage of this Editorial to thank all the authors of these sections. In addition, the editorial tasks performed by Guadalupe Garcı´a-Tsao and Ronald Oude-Elferink in ‘Beyond the Journal’ have been excellent. Without doubt the continued monthly overview given to us so brilliantly by Ju¨rg Reichen with ‘The Bridge’ is greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The policy of the Journal in accepting papers has remained unchanged. The number of papers submitted in 2002 has been around 1000 with a similar rate of acceptance as the previous year, of around 25%. The difficult task in selecting these papers for publication has been possible because of the huge effort undertaken by the Associate Editors and the Reviewers. The unstinting support and input of the Editorial Board to the Journal also cannot be forgotten. We are very proud of the fact that this year the impact factor of the Journal of Hepatology has markedly increased from 3.76 to 4.75. The position of our Journal in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology remains the same, in 5th place. However, it is important to note that the relative increase in the impact factor of our journal is 27%, whilst that of the other journals in the field has ranged between 6 and 18%. This remarkable achievement has been due to the work of the previous Editorship led by Gustav Paumgartner

in Mu¨nchen and the editorial policy carried out during the first year (2000) of the Journal in Barcelona. There is no doubt, that this success is the consequence of the work of the Assistant Editor, Associate Editors, and of course, the authors who have put their faith in our journal. As the Editor-in-Chief I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to all. Each year there are changes in the Journal and 2003 is no exception. As of January 1st authors can submit their papers online and reviewers will be able to review online. We have introduced the most up-to-date system that Scholar One has to offer with this being much more user friendly than some of the previous versions. The introduction of Manuscript Central will take Journal of Hepatology to new heights by aiding and speeding up the submission and review processes, and getting the best papers published even more rapidly than we are currently doing. We have most of our current database already uploaded, please visit jhep.manuscriptcentral.com to see if you are already in the system or create yourself an account. The development of this technology has been thanks to Nicola van Berckel, Gemma Lo´pez and Roser Poblet. The work of the publishing team of Elsevier, particularly that of Koos Admiraal, Majella Darcy and Robert Tausk has been most appreciated by myself and the Associate Editors. The future of the Journal is bright and I am very pleased to announce that a Special Issue including topics on the diagnosis and treatment of many liver disorders will appear in the first trimester of 2003. In addition, a new review section devoted to different aspects of liver transplantation will appear this year. We think that this new section will be not only very useful for readers but also highly interesting because of the importance that liver transplantation now plays in the treatment of patients with acute and chronic liver diseases.
