The Times They are A’ Changing—Again
A
s we begin a new year, some changes are coming again to Air Medical Journal. The most important and exciting one is that Mosby (now owned by Elsevier) has agreed to publish the journal for another 5 years. With this continuity will come the challenge of obtaining material suitable for publication and related to patient transport. During the past few years, Dr. David Dries and I, along with the editorial board, have been able to maintain the quality of AMJ with the support of the transport community. However, we face some of the same problems as other publications. We are seeing many changes in health care and transport systems. Many programs face financial reimbursement issues. Many institutions have elected to outsource patient transport. We are an aging and shrinking group. Time has become little and precious. Fortunately, Air Medical Journal has remained one of the primary publications to which the industry looks as a source of information about patient transport. We need to continue to be that source. This can be done only through the support of those who do the work. Some of things we are planning in the coming years include: • Resuming some of the industry surveys once published in AirMed and analyzing the results. Which surveys should we conduct and publish? Which ones have helped you in the past? • Publishing a journal that addresses specific issues that define and challenge patient transport • Archiving the journal in its entirety. Please contact development editor Dawn Drennan Nahlen at
[email protected] if you have back issues to spare. • Revising the Point/Counterpoint discussion columns. Send us your ideas on topics and volunteer to write one perspective. Perhaps one of the greatest trials the journal will face is the need to maintain the quality and quantity of the publication. We can do either only with your help. Send us your results on operational and financial matters. Finish those research

projects and send us your findings. Give us advice to share among peers. Finally, we would like to thank two very important people who make our work easier and the journal what it is. Nathania Sawyer, through her dedication and work as publisher, has provided the means for the journal to continue to be published. Good luck in your endeavors and thank you. Development editor Dawn Drennan Nahlen has made and will continue to make the page-by-page quality and quantity of AMJ what it is. The provision of safe and competent care is what we strive for during transport. This is your publication. You need to share the art and the science of transport with us all. Reneé S.
