THE USE OF CYBERNETICS ON THE RAILWAYS BRITISH R?,~LWA'rS have been invited by the International Union of Railways (U.I.C.) to take part in an international symposium on the "'use of cybernetics on the railways" in Paris next November. In extending this invitation, the secretariat of U.I.C. said that British Railways seemed "'to be far more advanced in this field than is generally known". Several experts from British Railways and some representatives from the Universities and industry are expected to take part in the symposium. The British party will be led by Mr. C. C. INGLIS, the British Railway Board's Chief of Research, who recently gave a paper on "'cybernetics and signalling" to the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers. The topics of the conference are: (1) Problems of automation associated with the control of all aspects of railwa~ operation, (2) Automation in the control of autonomous procedures, (3) Application of computors to railway management problems.
