This review of 35 hemophiliac children at University of Minnesota treated with implantable ports provides encouraging information that these devices have appliability to such patients. The results showed that the patients had an acceptable catheter occlusion and infection rate. No bleeding complications were noted with the placement of these devices. Lower profile devices with longer diaphragms appeared to work best. EMLA cream helped with pain management during access, but needed to be carefully washed off to reduce the possibility of infection. The authors also recommend the use of intermittent prophylactic urokinase.Michael
