These are three specialist modules in the Nursing Times Open Learning Programme. The first module is on the ‘Care of the Mother and Newborn’. The contents, as with the other two modules ‘Mental Health and Mental Handicap’ and ‘Community Health Care’, have been carefully designed to be user friendly, academically and professionally based to challenge the reader. The six authors and one acknowledged contributor to the Mental Handicap section of module 3 have undertaken painstaking literature review of each subiect area. The results are in-denth. well written and clinically relevant descriptive, analytic and evaluative packs. Although the modules have been written with the intention of being used alongside the weekly published materials in the Nursing Times, readers will find them a fascinating source of reference in their practice. The central theme of the teaching and learning stratecv is summarised in the ‘Work Planner’ at the begin&g of each module. This sets out advice on the keeping of a diary, approach to reflection on their contents and individual experiences and related focus activities at the end ofeach section. The style of writing and the presentation of materials help the reader to achieve a sense of purpose and clarity of ideas. The timing of the activities does, however, become unduly prescriptive and occasionally overbearing. The authors have selected instructive and interesting illustrations to support the text. There is a reference at the end of each module but the packs are not indexed. The distance learning approach remains one of the most effective ways of helping individuals to learn at their own pace. The author of this book has published three previous texts dealing with rehabilitation of stroke patients. The subtitle to the book: ‘Building on experience’ reflects a highly informative and instructive approach in which questions arising from seminars and discussions are shared with readers. Stroke is a cerebral accident with varying degrees of neurological consequences for the patient. The importance of practising from a knowledge base is stressed by the author. Thus Chapter 1 considers the neurological background necessary for an understanding of the stroke. This is followed by a consideration of application of neurology to the clinical problems encountered by the therapists. Chapter 3 deals with the sensorimotor concept, an understanding of which is fundamental to body homeostasis. This is linked appropriately to the principles of rehabilitation stressing the need for early action in order to prevent later problems for the patient. Act early and prevent serious complications for the patient. This is a book for the team working with stroke patients. The author discusses assessment, the use of pressure splints and provides instructive comments on problems associated with caring for the patient and helping in the process of rehabilitation. The use of pressure techniques is illustrated with a case history using selected photographs to reinforce the information provided. The book ends with a glossary of selected anatomical terms and useful addresses. A short index is provided. This is a welcome addition to the previous three books by the author. While individual students may not require personal copies, they should be made available in the library as essential sources of information on this important subject. CYNTHIA
