Thermal imaging camera The latest development from the 80 Series FIRESight thermal camera range from Insight Vision Systems is the FIR ESight-Survey. Its water-resistant construction and simplicity of operation make the camera suitable for uses in building energy surveys, flat roof leak detection and power line inspection. Its high resolution, accuracy and features also make it useful for condition monitoring and nondestructive testing. Factory fitted options include colour, freeze frame, digital data inserter, microphone, servo focus and built in rechargeable batteries. Up to three temperature ranges can be added.

Ultrasonic testing of tubes To complete its existing range of ROTA ultrasonic testing systems, Nukem has developed the ROTA 65 E and the ROTA 130 E. These systems are for standard applications, for the testing of longitudinal and transverse defects, for the measurement of wall thickness as well as for lamination testing vessel tubes, precision tubes and HF-welded tubes.

Bars can also be tested for core and surface defects. The following equipment for transducers is possible: • 2 x longitudinal + 2 x transverse + 1 x wall thickness/lamination • 4 x longitudinal defects + 1 x wall thickness/lamination • 4 x transverse + 1 x wall thickness/lamination The 65 E is used for testing of diameters between 10 and 65 mm, and the 130 E for diameters between 15 and 130 ram. The ROTA E uses the calibration of the transducers by means of distance pieces with a fixed angle. The system can be employed on-line or off-line. The set-up of the transducers for testing other diameters is easily carried out. Also available from the company, is the MCU master control unit, which is a conventional industrial PC equipped with the software required for the evaluation of the data registered in an ultrasonic testing system. All the user and visualization programs work under Windows. The standard functions of the MCU are the recording and management of the plant parameters, and the sorting and marking as well as the production of the tube evaluation protocols. During regular tube testing, the plant scheme appears on screen and shows the most important signals, ie the proximity switches for the testing of tube ends, the defect flags, the position of the tube and the defect, the testing speed, and also the number of the good and defective tubes tested. In addition to these standard applications, the testing data can be used in other applications with the help of a dynamic data exchange

program. In accordance with the test electronics used, further applications for the future are possible. For example, it is possible to represent the length of the tubes in real time and print their analogue signals. The PC can also be used as a digital oscilloscope. An optimal calibration of the system is possible with the help of test tube runs. A log book function allows the long term registration of characteristic plant parameters and their connection to required maintenance work. During a test, synthetic signals are compared to the initial signals measured. Thus, automatic calibration supervision evaluates reference runs with a test tube and shows deviations in the calibration.

N DT database on-line The NDT Database maintained by AEA Technology's National NDT Centre is now available on-line on ESA-IRS, and called NDT-AEA. This makes the world's premier database on nondestructive testing more accessible to enquirers. ESA-IRS (European Space Agency Information Retrieval Service) is a European host for the provision of information to the scientific, technical, industrial and institutional communities in the ESA member states, and throughout the world. It includes more than 200 databases on a broad range of subjects. The NDT Database is a bibliographic database concerning all aspects of nondestructive testing, evaluation and inspection. It contains references and
