Diffusion enriching device for the preparation of gas mixtures for analysis. (USSR) Hydrogen samples are introduced into a previously evacuated chamber and then removed by diffusion through a barrier heated to 450°C. The barrier material is a palladium alloy containing 3 ~ 4 0 per cent silver. The remaining impurities in the chamber are analyzed by a mass spectrometer. (USA) The use of a line-sourcetransient-heat-transfer technique to determine the thermal conductivities of He, Ne, Ar and of their mixtures is reported along with results. (USA) The tritium concentration of a gas mixture consisting primarily of helium was reduced from 10-2 mole per cent to 2 × 10-'2 mole per cent. Adsorption experiments on activated charcoal at 77 and 4.2°K were conducted using various traps and the results compared. Adsorption on charcoal at 77°K with traps of large surface areas was most efficient and practical. The tritium was then removed from the gas (mainly air) which had been cryogenically adsorbed by the charcoal. This was done by means of a catalyst. (USA) The report comprises a detailed description of the materials, techniques and problems in thin film applications to dielectrics, magnetics and semiconductors. The state of art of various aspects of ceramic thin film technology is critically reviewed, and recommendations are suggested to overcome existing limitations. Measurement of the linear-expansion coefficients of certain types of electrical vacuum glass. (USSR) Methods of testing and checking the linear-expansion coefficients of various types of glass used in the electrical vacuum industry are described and discussed, and the importance of having an accurate knowledge of these coefficients in order to secure good matching between glass and metal parts is emphasized. The double-filament "workshop" method is suitable for rapid routine determinations. In some cases an exact knowledge of the absolute linear-expansion coefficient is essential and this requires the use of more refined dilatometers. types of equipment used in flame-treating the glass components of electrical vacuum apparatus are tabulated. The general characteristics of the gases employed in the flame treatment of glass parts are summarized and equipment for the combustion of such gases is described. Instructions are included for the efficient mounting and practical use of flame-treatment equipment. (in Russian). 42:31 1173. Electrically-insulating glass. (USSR) A new type of electrically-insulating glass suitable for use in electrical vacuum apparatus is described. In order to improve its insulating properties, the composition of the new glass is taken as follows: SiO~48-52, A120313-16, B~O5 2-5, CaO 4-7, BaO 9-12, MnO 8-12, MgO 4-7 wt per cent. The glass has good technological properties which enable it to be used in the manufacture of insulators by the powder method and also by pressing. The low softening point of 710-750°C improves the reliability of the insulators under service conditions and facilitates the sealing of the associated electrical vacuum apparatus. Insulators made of this glass retain their insulating properties and vacuum tightness up to 700°C and withstand a fair amount of thermal cycling and mechanical shock. (USSR) Improvements in the equipment used for pressing of the glass parts of electrical vacuum apparatus, eg, the screens of cathode-ray tubes, are described. The working surfaces of the mandrels and dies in equipment of this kind are commonly made of heat-resistant alloys, reinforced cast iron, or similar materials, and require a very high order of surface finish, despite their frequently complicated shapes. The improvements here described are achieved by facing the mandrels, dies, and associated parts with heat-resistant, material thus greatly improving the quality of the finished glass articles. Study of micromechanical properties of adhesive bonded joints, (USA) The effectivetensile modulus of adhesives in thin film bonded form was found to be dependent on thickness. It was found that there is little correlation between the mechanical properties of bulk cured polymers and the same material in thin film form in a bonded joint. 44 1176. Effects of surface treatments on bonding to polyethylene with various type adhesives. (USA) Six surface treatments were investigated to determine what benefits they afforded in adhesive bonding to polyethylene. Best overall bonds were obtained with the epoxy adhesives. The effectiveness of the surface treatments tested in descending qualitative order are: flame treated, acid treated-rinsed-acetone dried, acid treated-rinsed--air dried.
