THERMOREFLECTANCE SPECTRA OF Cd3 As2 V.P. Bhola, Department of Physics, University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

The near normal incidence thermoreflectance spectra of Cd3As2 have been investigated at room ternperature and liquid nitrogen temperature in the spectral range 2.5—6.2 eV.

cubic Laves phase CeNi2, or by partial substitution of Cu with Ni in the orthorhombic compound CeCu2 has been investigated. No solid solubility of Cu, Ag and Au in the CeNi2 cubic lattice could be detected. In contrast, pseudobinary orthorhombic phases, corresponding to the formula CeCu2~Ni~, exist over the range x =0 to 1. For these phases, ctystal structures and magnetic properties have been determined. In every case, the electronic configuration of cerium appears to be unaffected by the Ni content, and corresponds to the trivalent state. The Ni atoms are in a non-magnetic state. The magnetic susceptibility of CeCu2 in the region from 530 to 900 K shows anomalous behaviour, which should be due to a metamagnetic transition.

ENHANCEMENT OF SELF FOCUSING OF LASER BEAMS IN A DEGENERATE MAGNETOACTWE SOLID STATE PLASMA M.S. Sodha, S.C. Kaushik, R.P. Sharma, K.P. Maheshwari and D.D. Kaushik, Physics Department, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi-i 10029, India.

This paper presents an investigation of the enhancement ofself focusing ofhigh frequency E.M. waves in a compensated degenerate magnetoactive solid state plasma. The non-linearity in the dielectric constant. responsible self-focusing arises due ofcarriers. to non-uniform heating and for consequent redistribution A

THIRD ORDER ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF RUBIDIUM CHLORIDE R.J. Wallat, Department of Physics and Materials Research Laboratory; and J. Holder, Department ofGeology and Materials Research Laboratory, University of illinois at UrbanaChampaign, Urbana, IL 61801, U.S.A.

The third order elastic constants of RbCl, determined by measurements of the static stress dependence ofultrasonic waves, are found to be (in units of 2) 1012 dyne C cm 111 = —6.71 ±0.1 C123 = 0.05 ±0.07

rigorous kinetic treatment valid beyond the perturbation limit has been presented assuming the carrier relaxation time to be energy dependent. The results show that the self-focusing of extraordinary waves is enhanced while that of ordinary waves is reduced with ~ increasing. However the focusing of extraordinary waves is not possible when w~>w. The effect of degeneracy is also found to enhance the self-focusing of the waves while that of the enhanced absorption is to suppress the selffocusing process.
