Bell, University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A., "The Role of Metal-Support Interactions on the Synthesis of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols over Group VIII Metals'!;Prof. Gary L. Haller, Yale University, New Haven, U.S.A., "Characterisationof Metal-Support Interaction for Rh/Ti02 and Comparison of Ti02 and V203 Supports for Butane Reactions on Rh, Ir and Pt; and Prof. Vlademir Ponec, State University of Leiden, The Netherlands, "On the Particle Size Effects in the Reactions of Hydrocarbons". An event which followed the symposium was a five-day "School of Catalysisw (23-27 September) conducted by the invited lecturers already mentioned with the assistance of about 50 other people. This was devoted mainly to new developments in Cl catalytic chemistry, with a strong emphasis on physicochemical aspects, including the utilisation of chemical techniques for the characterisation of supported metal catalysts. In addition, the invited lecturers analysed some specific processes such as Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (Prof. Bell), The Kinetics and Mechanism of the Synthesis of Methanol and Higher Oxygenates (Prof. Klier) and The Formation of Oxygenates by Synthesis Gas Reactions (Prof. Ponec). A total of 238 extended abstracts of the contributions were compiled into the printed conference proceedings. More than 160 participants were present from university, research institute and various industrial works from all parts of the country. Four invited plenary lectures were presented: tlProgress in (i) Polymerisation Catalysts for Olefins", by Prof. Lin Shang-an of Zhongshan University; (ii) "Advances in Catalytic Combustion Catalysts", by Prof. Wu Shan-liang of East China Institute of Chemical Technology; (iii) "Progress in the Study of Zeolitic Catalysts", by Prof. Zhong Shong-an of Fudan University; and (iv) "Advances in the Application of Modern Physico-Chemical Techniques for Catalysis Research", by Prof. Deng Jing-fa of Fudan University. In addition to these plenary lectures, a total of 94 lectures were presented in four parallel sessions devoted to the following topics: (i) Catalyst Manufacturing Engineering; (ii) Catalytic Reaction Engineering and Kinetics; (iii> Zeolite Catalysts; and (iv) Catalyst Characterisation. During the closing ceremony, Mr. Zhang Shi (Senior Engineer of the Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology) was elected as the Director of the Association.
